Getting to Yunnan 2026: KMG, LJG, DIG & the HSR Compared

Four ways into Yunnan for foreign travellers — Kunming Changshui (KMG), Lijiang Sanyi (LJG), Diqing Shangri-La (DIG) and the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang HSR — compared by base, altitude and trip length.

By China for Travelers Editorial · Published · Updated

Editorial team based in Chongqing — has not used all four entries personally in 2026. This comparison is drawn from 2024-2026 r/travelchina and r/chinatravel threads, Trip.com flight and HSR data, published airline schedules, and Amap (高德地图) routing verified 2026-05-23. This is Path-2 editorial-aggregated coverage — confirm fares, schedules and terminal details on Trip.com or the 12306 app before you travel. Corrections from Yunnan residents are welcomed (see about page).

Four entries into Yunnan — the short version

Most foreign travellers enter Yunnan in one of four ways. The right choice depends on where your trip is centred, how many days you have, and your altitude tolerance:

  • KMG — Kunming Changshui Airport — the canonical Yunnan gateway. Densest connections, gentlest altitude arrival (1,890 m), and a designated 240-hour transit port. The right choice for most first-time Yunnan visitors.
  • LJG — Lijiang Sanyi Airport — the day-saver for travellers whose only Yunnan stop is Lijiang. No Kunming transit day; land and you are 28 km from the UNESCO Old Town. Downside: you arrive at 2,400 m without the Kunming acclimatisation buffer.
  • DIG — Diqing Shangri-La Airport — Yunnan's highest commercial airport (~3,300 m). Direct way to skip the long road from Lijiang, but carries a real altitude-sickness risk for anyone arriving from sea level. Best used as an exit after the full loop, not an entry.
  • Kunming-Dali-Lijiang HSR — the scenic inland alternative to flying KMG → LJG. If you are already in Kunming or arriving via KMG, the HSR spine through Yunnan is one of China's most rewarding train journeys and reaches Dali and Lijiang in a single day.

KMG — Kunming Changshui Airport (the canonical entry)

Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is the gateway most foreign travellers should use. It is Yunnan's primary aviation hub, handling the densest network of domestic connections (direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenzhen and dozens more) plus growing international routes (Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and others). Kunming also sits at a manageable 1,890 m above sea level — higher than most Chinese cities, but low enough that altitude sickness is rarely a concern for healthy travellers arriving from sea level.

240-hour transit port. KMG is one of China's designated 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit ports. If you hold a qualifying passport and are transiting between two international destinations, you may be eligible to stay in Yunnan for up to 240 hours without a Chinese visa. See the 240-hour transit guide for eligibility and conditions — and check the visa checker tool for your passport.

The KMG article covers terminal layout, Metro Line 6 transport into the city, the hotel options airside and in Changshui village, connecting flight advice for onward domestic legs, and baggage storage. This section is a summary only — for the full picture read the dedicated guide:

LJG — Lijiang Sanyi Airport (old-town direct)

Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG, 丽江三义机场) is located approximately 28 km south of Lijiang's UNESCO Old Town in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County — a small, single-terminal domestic airport with efficient processing times and no international terminal. Coordinates: 100.246°E / 26.671°N (Amap verified 2026-05-23).

Routes from LJG. Lijiang Sanyi is primarily a domestic airport with seasonal Asian regional additions:

  • Kunming (KMG) — approximately 50 minutes, the most frequent route
  • Chengdu (CTU) — approximately 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Chongqing (CKG) — approximately 1 hour
  • Beijing (PEK/PKX) — approximately 3 hours
  • Shanghai (PVG/SHA) — approximately 3 hours
  • Guangzhou (CAN) — approximately 2 hours
  • Seasonal: Bangkok (BKK/DMK) and Seoul (ICN) — check availability when booking

Getting to Lijiang Old Town from LJG. Two reliable options:

  • Airport shuttle bus — approximately ¥20, runs to the Old Town gate area (大研古城北门 vicinity), journey roughly 50 minutes depending on traffic. Timetabled to meet major arrivals; buy tickets in the arrivals hall.
  • Taxi or DiDi — approximately ¥80-100, roughly 45 minutes (Amap 2026-05-23). More direct and faster than the shuttle, especially with luggage. DiDi works in Lijiang; have the app installed before you land.

When to choose LJG. LJG makes sense if Lijiang is your only Yunnan stop, or if you have 5 days or fewer in Yunnan and saving the Kunming transit day matters. It is also the right choice for travellers returning to Lijiang on a repeat visit who already know the acclimatisation picture.

The altitude consideration. You arrive at approximately 2,400 m without the gentle acclimatisation buffer a Kunming night provides (Kunming sits at 1,890 m). For most healthy travellers this is fine — Lijiang's altitude is significant but well below high-altitude threshold. But if you are prone to altitude effects, a Kunming arrival with one overnight before flying or training to Lijiang is a worthwhile precaution. See the DIG section below for a harder altitude warning.

DIG — Diqing Shangri-La Airport (Tibetan edge, altitude warning)

Diqing Shangri-La Airport (DIG, 迪庆香格里拉机场) is Yunnan's highest commercial airport, sitting at approximately 3,300 m above sea level on the Shangri-La plateau in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Coordinates: 99.680°E / 27.790°N (Amap verified 2026-05-23).

Routes from DIG. Limited schedule — check availability early, as DIG seats sell out on peak dates:

  • Kunming (KMG) — the most frequent route
  • Chengdu (CTU)
  • Lijiang (LJG) — short hop, sometimes useful for the loop
  • Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (PVG/SHA), Guangzhou (CAN) — typically 1-2 daily, seasonal

Getting to Shangri-La from DIG.

  • Airport shuttle bus — approximately ¥30, roughly 30 minutes into Shangri-La Old Town.
  • Taxi — approximately ¥40-60 to Old Town.

Critical altitude warning — read this before booking DIG as an entry point. Diqing Shangri-La town sits at approximately 3,200 m. If you are flying in from Beijing (44 m), Shanghai (4 m), Guangzhou (21 m) or any other low-altitude city, you will step off the plane at 3,300 m with no acclimatisation period whatsoever. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) symptoms — persistent headache, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping — can begin within 6-12 hours of arriving at high altitude without gradual ascent. Most travellers on the road from Lijiang to Shangri-La arrive over 4-6 hours, which gives the body a partial buffer. A direct flight removes that buffer entirely.

Practical steps if you fly into DIG:

  • Take the first day completely slowly — no strenuous hiking, no alcohol, no heavy meals. Walk the Old Town at a gentle pace.
  • Oxygen sachets are sold at pharmacies near the airport and throughout Shangri-La town (Jiaju Tibetan Village and Old Town squares). They are cheap and widely available. Buy some on arrival before you need them.
  • Reconsider DIG as an entry if you have any history of heart or lung conditions, or if you are travelling with children or elderly family members. The safer routing is KMG → Lijiang (road or HSR, arriving at 2,400 m) → one or two nights acclimatising → road to Shangri-La over 4-6 hours.

DIG as an exit, not an entry. The most practical use of DIG for most foreign travellers is as the exit airport at the end of the Yunnan loop — by the time you reach Shangri-La via Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, your body has ascended gradually and the high altitude is familiar. Flying out from DIG to Beijing or Shanghai is then straightforward. This is the classic routing: fly IN to KMG → loop Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La → fly OUT from DIG.

This is practical travel information based on traveller-reported experiences, not medical advice. Consult a physician before travelling to high altitude if you have any health concerns.

Kunming-Dali-Lijiang HSR (the scenic inland alternative)

The Yunnan HSR spine is one of China's most rewarding rail journeys — a high-speed line cutting through Yunnan's mountain landscape, connecting Kunming to Dali and then north to Lijiang. If you are entering Yunnan via KMG or are already in Kunming for another reason, the HSR makes the domestic flight to LJG entirely optional.

Construction timeline. The HSR was built in two phases:

  • Kunming South → Dali — opened 2018, journey time approximately 2 hours 25 minutes.
  • Dali → Lijiang — extension opened 2023, adding approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Total Kunming South → Lijiang — approximately 3 hours direct, with trains running roughly every 1-2 hours throughout the day.

Station note. The Kunming end of the line uses Kunming South Station (昆明南站) — not Kunming Station (昆明站, the older central station). Kunming South is in the southern Guandu district, roughly 14 km from the city centre (coordinates: 102.861°E / 24.870°N). Metro Line 4 connects Kunming South to the city centre (Kunming Station interchange) in approximately 25 minutes. If you arrive into Kunming city via Metro Line 6 from KMG airport, you will need to transfer to Line 4 to reach Kunming South for the Dali or Lijiang HSR. Plan for 45-60 minutes between landing and reaching Kunming South on a clear day.

Booking the Kunming-Lijiang HSR as a foreigner. Trip.com's English interface is the most straightforward booking path: enter your passport number, pick your seat class, and the ticket is tied to your document. No printout required — scan your passport at the automated gate at Kunming South. The 12306 app supports foreign registration but its interface is largely Chinese. Fares vary by seat class and demand; second-class fares are typically around ¥200-260 for the full Kunming South → Lijiang route.

When to choose the HSR over flying KMG → LJG. The HSR is door-to-door competitive because both airports require transit time. If you are already in Kunming city, the HSR to Lijiang is usually faster or comparable overall to taking a taxi back to KMG, checking in for a 1-hour domestic flight, and then shuttling from LJG into town. The HSR also lets you stop at Dali for one or two nights en route — something a direct LJG flight precludes.

Lijiang Railway Station (丽江站)

The new Lijiang Railway Station (丽江站) opened in 2023 as the northern terminus of the Yunnan HSR extension from Dali. The station is located approximately 8 km southeast of Lijiang Old Town (coordinates: 100.253°E / 26.811°N, Amap verified 2026-05-23), in the newer part of Lijiang city.

The station building references Naxi ethnic architecture — the curved roof profiles and decorative motifs echo the aesthetic of the Old Town itself, making it one of the more characterful HSR stations in Yunnan. It handles G-class HSR trains only; conventional slower trains do not serve this station.

Getting from Lijiang Station to Old Town:

  • DiDi or taxi — approximately ¥25-35, roughly 15-20 minutes. The fastest option with luggage.
  • Airport shuttle bus — the LJG airport shuttle bus passes through the railway station on its way into Old Town (~¥20 to the Old Town gate area). Timing depends on the shuttle schedule; ask at the station exit.
  • Public bus — bus routes connect the station to the city; confirm current routes and numbers on arrival as services change.

Luggage lockers (Alipay/WeChat QR payment) and staffed left-luggage service are available in the main concourse if you want to drop bags before checking in to your accommodation.

Dali Station (大理站) — the HSR stop for Dali Old Town

Dali Railway Station (大理站) is the HSR station serving the Dali area, located in the Xiaguan district of Dali City — approximately 13 km from Dali Old Town (大理古城) (coordinates: 100.251°E / 25.590°N, Amap verified 2026-05-23). The administrative city of Dali includes both Old Town and the modern Xiaguan district, but they feel very different on the ground. The railway station is in the modern Xiaguan side; the Old Town, the Erhai Lake shore and the Three Pagodas are across that 13 km gap.

Getting from Dali Station to Old Town:

  • Taxi or DiDi — approximately ¥25-40, roughly 20-25 minutes.
  • Bus 8 (公共汽车 8路) — runs from the station area toward the Old Town direction; very cheap (roughly ¥2 by QR code) but takes 40-50 minutes and requires local knowledge of the stop.
  • Guesthouse pickup — many Old Town guesthouses and boutique hotels offer pickups if booked ahead. Worth confirming at reservation time.

Dali Station handles both northbound G-trains toward Lijiang and southbound G-trains toward Kunming South. It is the natural midpoint stop for the Yunnan HSR loop.

Decision matrix — picking your entry

Three decision axes: your base, altitude tolerance, and trip length.

By base:

  • Lijiang only — fly to LJG. Saves the Kunming transit day. Accept the 2,400 m arrival without a buffer night.
  • Full Yunnan loop (Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La) — fly to KMG, then either take the HSR or a domestic KMG → LJG flight for the onward leg. Exit from DIG after the loop for the ideal one-way arc.
  • Shangri-La as first stop (skip Lijiang) — fly to DIG only if you have pre-acclimatised (spent 2+ nights at 2,400 m+ recently). Otherwise, road in from Lijiang.
  • Yunnan via Kunming already — use the HSR. Skip the domestic flight, enjoy the scenery, and stop at Dali en route.

By altitude tolerance:

  • First-time high-altitude traveller or any health concern — KMG (1,890 m) strongly recommended. Spend one night in Kunming before ascending.
  • Healthy, no prior AMS, repeat high-altitude traveller — LJG (2,400 m) is fine for most people. DIG (3,300 m) is a calculated risk; take the first day slowly and buy oxygen sachets.

By trip length:

  • 5 days or fewer — LJG saves a day; the time cost of KMG → overnight → onward is real for short trips.
  • 5-7 days — KMG + HSR spine (Kunming → Dali → Lijiang). Fits neatly. Skip Shangri-La unless you extend to 8-9 days.
  • 7+ days (10-14 day ideal) — KMG entry + full loop + DIG exit is the most rewarding itinerary. You ascend gradually, see all four bases, and exit from the highest point. See the getting around Yunnan guide for the full inter-city routing including the Lijiang-Shangri-La road.

Yuanyang access — no airport near the rice terraces

The Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (UNESCO 2013) are in southern Yunnan, structurally separate from the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang- Shangri-La loop. There is no commercial airport in Yuanyang. The nearest airport is Mengzi Tianma (MHX) or Jianshui County (neither is well-connected), which puts the nearest meaningful airport at KMG — roughly 2-3 hours by bus or car from Yuanyang via the Yuxi-Mengzi expressway.

Most travellers visit Yuanyang from Kunming (overnight bus or 3-4 hour car) or from Jianshui (a heritage town on its own right, connected to Kunming South by HSR). For routing details, altitude context (Yuanyang sits at ~1,600-2,000 m depending on the viewpoint), and the best sunrise timing, see: getting around Yunnan — Yuanyang section.

Frequently asked questions

KMG vs LJG vs DIG — which Yunnan airport is best?
It depends on your base and time. KMG (Kunming Changshui) is the canonical choice for most trips: the densest connections, the gentlest altitude arrival (1,890 m), and the gateway to the full Yunnan loop. Choose LJG (Lijiang Sanyi) if Lijiang is your only stop or you have 5 days or fewer and want to skip the Kunming transit day. Choose DIG (Diqing Shangri-La) only if you are ending your Yunnan loop in Shangri-La, or if you are flying in from Chengdu or Kunming and have already acclimatised — arriving at 3,300 m from sea level is a genuine altitude-sickness risk. For most first-time Yunnan visitors, KMG + the onward HSR or KMG → LJG domestic flight gives the best combination of access and safety.
Does Diqing Shangri-La Airport (DIG) have real altitude risks?
Yes. DIG sits at approximately 3,300 m above sea level — the airport itself is high-altitude terrain. If you are flying in from a low-altitude city (sea level in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou), you will arrive at 3,200 m with no acclimatisation period. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) symptoms — headache, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath — can begin within hours of arriving at high altitude without gradual ascent. The safer route is to spend a night in Lijiang (2,400 m) first before ascending to Shangri-La (3,200 m). Oxygen sachets are sold at pharmacies near the airport and throughout Shangri-La town. If you have any history of heart or lung conditions, consult a physician before booking a direct flight to DIG. This is practical travel information, not medical advice — for medical guidance, speak to a doctor before departure.
What is the best HSR class for Kunming to Lijiang?
Second class (二等座) is perfectly comfortable and the most popular choice for independent travellers. The Kunming-Dali-Lijiang HSR uses standard high-speed G-class trains with modern interiors, air conditioning and a food trolley service. Second-class seats have 3+2 seating with adequate legroom for the roughly 3-hour journey. First class (一等座) gives wider 2+2 seats and more privacy for a meaningful but not dramatic premium. Business class (商务座) exists on some trains but is significantly more expensive and rarely justified for this scenic daylight journey. For most travellers, book second class and enjoy the views.
How early should I arrive at KMG (Kunming Changshui Airport)?
Allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours before your domestic departure from KMG, and 3 hours for international flights. Kunming Changshui is a large, busy regional hub — security queues can be substantial during peak domestic travel periods, and the terminal is large enough that reaching remote gates takes time. The KMG metro (Line 6) runs from Kunming Railway Station to the airport; journey time is approximately 42 minutes with trains roughly every 6-10 minutes. If connecting from the Kunming South HSR station (the terminal for the Dali-Lijiang HSR), take a taxi or DiDi to the airport rather than going back into the city centre — the airport-to-Kunming-South drive is roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. See the dedicated KMG airport guide for full terminal, transport and check-in details.
Can I book Trip.com trains to Lijiang with a non-Chinese passport?
Yes. Trip.com's English interface accepts foreign passport numbers for all China HSR bookings. You enter your passport number during the booking flow, and it becomes your boarding document — there is nothing to print. At the station, scan your passport at the automated gate or show it at a staffed lane. This is the same real-name (实名制) system used across the Chinese rail network. Trip.com charges a small service fee above the face-value 12306 price, but its English interface is substantially easier to navigate than 12306's for first-time users. The ticket is non-transferable (tied to your specific passport number) — ensure you book the correct passport.
Is the Kunming-Lijiang HSR cheaper than flying?
For the direct Kunming → Lijiang segment, the HSR is generally comparable to or slightly cheaper than a domestic flight when you factor in airport transit time and baggage. HSR second-class fares on the Kunming South → Lijiang route are typically around ¥200-260. Budget domestic flights (Kunming KMG → Lijiang LJG) can be as low as ¥150-200 during sales, but add airport transit time at both ends (40 minutes each way) and the price advantage disappears. The HSR's real advantage is the journey itself — the Kunming-Dali leg through Yunnan's mountain valleys is genuinely scenic — and the city-centre-to-city-centre door-to-door time is competitive. For the Kunming → Dali segment specifically, HSR (~2h25m city centre to city centre) is clearly faster than flying, which would require two airport transfers for a 35-minute flight.
Can I combine entry and exit at different airports?
Yes, and this is the recommended strategy for a full Yunnan loop. The classic routing is: fly INTO KMG → transit Kunming, then Dali, then Lijiang by HSR → take the Lijiang-Shangri-La road (bus or chartered vehicle, ~4 hours) → fly OUT from DIG (Diqing Shangri-La). This gives you a natural acclimatisation arc from 1,890 m (Kunming) to 2,100 m (Dali) to 2,400 m (Lijiang) to 3,200 m (Shangri-La) — the altitude increase is gradual rather than abrupt. Booking a return to KMG and a separate one-way exit from DIG is straightforward on Trip.com. Alternatively, fly IN to LJG (Lijiang) and OUT from DIG — a shorter version of the same loop skipping Kunming and Dali.
Does Lijiang Railway Station have luggage storage?
Yes. Lijiang Railway Station (丽江站, the new HSR station opened 2023) has self-service luggage lockers in the main concourse, accepting Alipay or WeChat Pay QR codes. Staffed left-luggage storage is also available. If you want to arrive by train, drop your bags, and explore Old Town before checking in to your hotel, the station lockers are a practical option — the station is only 15-20 minutes from the Old Town by DiDi or taxi (around ¥25-35), so a round trip to retrieve bags later in the day is not burdensome.
What is the Dali Station situation — which station for Dali Old Town?
The Dali HSR station (大理站, sometimes called Dali Station or Xiaguan Station) is in the Xiaguan district of Dali City — about 13 km from Dali Old Town (大理古城). This matters because Dali Old Town and Xiaguan are administratively the same city but feel quite different on the ground, and the 13 km gap means you need onward transport. Options from the station: taxi or DiDi to Old Town (~20-25 minutes, roughly ¥25-40); Bus 8 (public, very cheap, roughly 40-50 minutes); some guesthouses offer pickups if you book ahead. The station serves both north-bound G-trains to Lijiang and south-bound G-trains to Kunming South — it is the natural stopping point for a Dali overnight between Kunming and Lijiang.
