Flying into Chengdu — CTU or TFU?

As in every dual-airport city, the route usually chooses for you — but Chengdu’s split is the cleanest in China, so the pattern is worth knowing before you book:

Pick CTU (Shuangliu) when: Domestic business shuttles, tourist and high-plateau routes (Lhasa, Nyingchi) — and from 2026-07-30, most HK/Macau/Taiwan flights. It is the close-in airport: 16 km from town, ¥30-50 by taxi. Ground detail in the Shuangliu airport guide.

Pick TFU (Tianfu) when: All regular international long-haul plus most domestic trunk routes — the 2021 mega-airport is the default arrival, T1 international / T2 domestic. Budget the ~50 km: Line 18 express ~34 min, taxi ¥150-200. See the Tianfu airport guide.

Booking tip: on domestic legs where both airports appear, price the ground time too — CTU’s ¥30-50 taxi versus TFU’s ¥150-200 (or an hour on the Line 18 express) often outweighs a small fare gap, especially for a panda-and-hotpot city break.

The 30 July 2026 reshuffle: HK/Macau/Taiwan back to Shuangliu

The biggest Chengdu airport change since Tianfu opened: from 06:00 on 30 July 2026, Shuangliu’s refitted T1 international hall reopens and Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan flights move back from Tianfu in phases over 30-31 July (complete by 2 August). Seven carriers are in the move: Air China, Sichuan Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Air Macau, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines and EVA Air.

It is a partial move — the booking is authoritative. Air China keeps flying the region from BOTH airports, and Tianfu retains services such as the daily Air China/Shenzhen Airlines Hong Kong flights and some China Eastern Taichung rotations. A Hong Kong flight booked for early August could reasonably leave from either airport — read the airport code on the confirmation, and re-check it if the airline re-times the flight.

Which airport by scenario

Long-haul arrival (Europe / North America / Australia / SE Asia). You will land at TFU T1 — no choice involved. Plan the 50 km: Line 18 express to South Railway Station (~34 min, ~¥10) then the metro onward, the in-airport HSR to Chengdu East (~27-30 min) for rail connections, or a ¥150-200 taxi. Hong Kong / Macau / Taiwan flight after 30 July 2026. Probably CTU — but only probably: the move is partial and Air China flies the region from both airports. Read the airport code on the booking; if it says TFU, that is not an error.

Lhasa / Nyingchi (high-plateau) leg. CTU — the high-plateau routes are a Shuangliu specialty. Convenient, too: 16 km from town means a ¥30-50 taxi to the departure hall.

Onward HSR (Chongqing corridor, Xi'an, anywhere from Chengdu East). Both airports link to Chengdu East: CTU’s intercity does it in ~10-16 min (~¥8, from T2 B2), TFU’s in-airport HSR in ~27-30 min (¥24-34). Neither requires crossing the city — see the Chengdu East guide.

International arrival at TFU + domestic connection at CTU. The trap itinerary — it is an airport change, not a terminal change. With 3+ h between flights, the Line 19 express (~30 min) works; under 2 h, taxi only, carry-on only — and honestly, ask the airline to re-route instead.

Chengdu is the one dual-airport city that built a dedicated rail link: Metro Line 19 airport-to-airport express (two stops: TFU ↔ CTU T2-East) · overnight coach line 5 (00:00-05:00, hourly) · taxi ~40-60 min — ~30 min by the Line 19 express; ~50 km by road (~¥10 metro · ¥25 night coach · ¥150-200 taxi).

Mind the metro caveats: the two-stop express runs only on the Line 19 alignment (TFU ↔ Shuangliu T2-East) — regular trains make all stops (~50 min), and any metro-to-metro change means exiting and re-clearing security with your bags. Overnight, coach line 5 bridges 00:00-05:00 (¥25, hourly, ~60 min).

Recovery maths (traveller consensus): 3+ hours between flights → the Line 19 express saves you; under 2 hours → taxi immediately (¥150-200, 40-60 min), carry-on only, and even then it is a coin flip. Booking both legs through one airport remains the only calm itinerary.

The itinerary decides; what matters is noticing when an international arrival at TFU connects to a domestic leg at CTU, because that is a 50 km airport change, not a terminal change.

What happens if I land at Tianfu after midnight?

You still have three workable exits: the 24-hour airport coach into Chunxi Road (¥25 on the overnight tariff, ~70-90 min), taxi/DiDi from the marked ranks (¥150-200 plus tolls, just over an hour), or — if your goal is actually Shuangliu for a morning flight — the 00:00-05:00 inter-airport coach line 5 (¥25, hourly). The metro (Lines 18/19) stops around 23:00-23:30, so a red-eye plan should not depend on it.
