Chengdu East Railway Station 2026: metro, gates & HSR

No — Chengdu has several rail stations and they are not interchangeable, and mixing them up is the most common foreign-traveller error. Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站, Chenghua district) is the main high-speed-rail hub — most G-trains to Chongqing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Beijing, Guiyang, Kunming and the Jiuzhaigou HSR depart here. Chengdu South Station (成都南站) handles the Tianfu Airport metro Line 18 plus the Mt Emei and Leshan intercity trains. Chengdu Railway Station (成都站 / 火车北站) is the old conventional-rail terminal, mostly slower trains, under long-term reconstruction. Chengdu West (成都西站) handles some western-corridor services. Read the station name on your ticket — 成都东 / 成都南 / 成都 / 成都西 — they are far apart and on different metro lines.

Metro. The 成都东客站 station sits directly under the rail concourse — follow the signs down, no need to leave the building. Line 2 (the east-west line) runs direct to Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li in about 22 minutes door-to-door with no transfer (use metro exit B), and to Tianfu Square in ~16 minutes. Line 7 is the orbital ring. Metro fare ¥2-7. A taxi or DiDi to the centre (Chunxi Road) is roughly ¥20-30 and ~18-30 minutes off-peak over about 7 km — quick by big-city standards because the station is closer to the centre (~7 km) than Guangzhou's or Beijing's main HSR stations.

Chengdu East is the high-speed hub for the whole southwest. Headline routes for foreign travellers: Chongqing (Chengdu East → Chongqing North, ~1h 20m by G-train, roughly 10 services an hour at peak — one of the densest intercity HSR pairs in western China); Xi'an (Chengdu East → Xi'an North, ~3.5-4h, for the Terracotta Warriors); Jiuzhaigou (Chengdu East → Huanglongjiuzhai, ~3h on the 2023-opened HSR, then a transfer to the valley); Shanghai (~10-11h); Beijing (~8h); plus Guiyang and Kunming. The Mt Emei and Leshan intercity trains depart Chengdu South Station, not Chengdu East — confirm the departure station on your ticket.

The simplest path is the Tianfu Airport Express Bus Line 4 (天府国际机场公交专线4号线), which runs directly from the Chengdu East West Plaza (成都东客站西广场) to TFU — about 74 minutes in the bus (allow ~85 minutes door-to-door). One bus, no transfers, easiest with luggage. The metro alternative is Line 7 to Chengdu South (火车南站), then Line 18 to the airport — roughly 85-90 minutes. If you're chaining an HSR arrival at Chengdu East with an onward flight, budget at least 2.5-3 hours between the scheduled train arrival and the flight, more for an international departure.

Metro: Line 7 from Chengdu East to 太平园 (exit toward the platform marked L2), then transfer to Line 10 straight to the Shuangliu Airport terminals — about 58 minutes total. Because CTU is much closer to the city than TFU, a taxi is also a reasonable option here. Check which airport your flight uses: CTU (Shuangliu) is the older, closer airport now mostly handling short-haul domestic routes; TFU (Tianfu) is the newer airport far to the southeast for most international and long-haul flights.

Chengdu East and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding are both in Chenghua district, but the Panda Base is well to the north and there is no single fast metro line between them. The metro runs roughly 80-90 minutes (Line 7 to 驷马桥, transfer to Line 3 to 军区总医院 or 熊猫大道, then the 409 / 408 connector bus and the internal park walk). A taxi or DiDi is usually the better choice from the station — about 30-40 minutes — especially if you want to catch the early-morning panda activity window. Allow 45-60 minutes from arriving at the station to boarding. Chengdu East is a large modern HSR station: you enter through a 进站口 (North or East entrance), pass security X-ray screening, find your waiting zone and check-in gate (检票口 A2-A26 on the 2F concourse), and gates close 5 minutes before departure. The station is real-name (实名制) — your passport is scanned at the gate as both ticket and ID, so carry the physical passport you booked with. The Chengdu↔Chongqing corridor is frequent enough that a missed train is recoverable; treat long-haul gate times (Shanghai, Beijing) as hard.

Only if your train is genuinely early (before ~7am) or your arrival is very late. The immediate Chengdu East area (the West Plaza on 嘉陵江路 / 沱江路) is a transit-plaza zone — the hotels are the Longzhimeng (龙之梦) group plus budget chains and serviced apartments, with limited walkable food and no sightseeing. There's no major mid-tier chain right at the station. For any normal stay, Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li is only ~22 minutes away on Line 2 with far better food and atmosphere — stay central and accept one clean metro ride on travel day.
