The West Plaza (西广场) immediately outside the station has a dense hotel cluster. Should you stay here? Only if your train is genuinely early (before ~7am) or your arrival is very late. The immediate Chengdu East area is a transit-plaza zone — functional hotels, limited walkable food (Amap returns just a handful of restaurants within 500m, mostly hotel restaurants), and no sightseeing. For any normal stay, Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li is only ~22 minutes away on Line 2 with vastly better food and atmosphere. Treat a Chengdu-East hotel as a purpose-specific choice for an awkward train time, not a default base.

From Chengdu East to the Panda Base

Chengdu East and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding are both in Chenghua district, but the Panda Base is well to the north and there is no fast single-line metro between them. Per Amap 2026-05-22 the metro route runs ~82 minutes (Line 7 to 驷马桥, transfer to Line 3 to 军区总医院 / the Panda Base West Gate, then the 409 connector bus and the internal park walk).

For most travelers a taxi or DiDi is the better choice from Chengdu East — roughly 12-15 km, ¥35-55, 25-40 minutes off-peak. If you've just stepped off an HSR train and the Panda Base is your first stop, the taxi straight from the West Plaza saves the metro transfers and gets you inside the gate for the 8-11am panda activity window. (A historic direct “Panda Express” tourist-bus route from Chengdu East has appeared and been suspended at various times — don't rely on it; the taxi is the dependable option.)
