Use Chengdu East when your ticket says 成都东 — it is the city's primary HSR hub and the one for Chongqing, Xi'an, Jiuzhaigou and the national network. It is not Chengdu South (成都南站, the Mt Emei / Leshan and Tianfu-airport-metro station) or the old Chengdu Railway Station (成都站 / 火车北站); the stations are far apart.

First: which of Chengdu's rail stations?

Default to Chengdu East for any national HSR train and for Chongqing, Xi'an or Jiuzhaigou. Use Chengdu South only if your ticket is a Mt Emei / Leshan intercity or the Tianfu-airport metro — and always read the station name printed on the ticket.

Chengdu has several rail stations and mixing them up is the single most common foreign-traveller mistake. They are far apart, on different metro lines, and arriving at the wrong one can cost you the train. The one thing that matters is which station your ticket names.

StationChineseWhat leaves here
Chengdu East — this station成都东站 / 成都东客站Main HSR hub — Chongqing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Beijing, Guiyang, Kunming, Jiuzhaigou HSR
Chengdu South成都南站 / 火车南站Tianfu Airport metro Line 18; Mt Emei + Leshan intercity; some southbound services
Chengdu Railway Station成都站 / 火车北站Old conventional-rail terminal (slower trains); long-term reconstruction
Chengdu West成都西站Western-corridor services, incl. some Dujiangyan / Qingcheng intercity

The exception that catches people: day trips to Leshan or Mt Emei leave from Chengdu South, not Chengdu East. A ticket booked on Trip.com or 12306 always names the exact station — trust the ticket, not the assumption.

To and from the city

The 成都东客站 metro station sits directly under the rail concourse — follow the signs down from the arrival hall, no need to leave the building. Two lines serve it: Line 2 (the east-west line — the one most visitors want) and Line 7 (the orbital ring). Pay with an Alipay or WeChat transit QR — a foreign Visa/Mastercard linked to Alipay works (see our Alipay for foreigners guide).

Chengdu East has an East Plaza (东广场) and a West Plaza (西广场). The West Plaza is the one to know: it has the taxi rank, the airport buses, and the station-side hotels. The East Plaza connects to the long-distance coach terminal (成都东站汽车客运站). The metro is reached from the concourse level either way. Metro runs roughly 6:20 am to 11:00 pm; after the last train, the West-Plaza taxi rank is the fallback to the centre.

Coming the other way: metro → your train

Arriving by Line 2 or Line 7 to catch a train, follow signs up from the 成都东客站 platforms to the 进站口 (entrance) — the North Entrance (北进站口) or East Entrance (东进站口) — then through the security X-ray to the 2F waiting concourse and your check-in gate (检票口 A2-A26); your gate is printed on the departure board. You do go through security again entering the rail hall, so allow 5-10 minutes metro-to-gate normally, more at peak with luggage. Gates close 5 minutes before departure — that cutoff is hard.

To the airports — TFU and CTU

Chengdu has two airports, and which one you use changes the route entirely. Check your boarding pass: TFU (Tianfu) is the big newer airport far to the southeast for most international and long-haul flights; CTU (Shuangliu) is the older, closer airport for short-haul domestic.

  • Tianfu Airport (TFU) — the simplest path is the Tianfu Airport Express Bus Line 4 (天府国际机场公交专线4号线), direct from the Chengdu East West Plaza to TFU (~74 min in the bus, ~85 min door-to-door). A single bus, no transfers — easiest with luggage. The metro alternative is Line 7 to Chengdu South (火车南站), then Line 18 to the airport (~85-90 min). See our Tianfu Airport (TFU) guide.
  • Shuangliu Airport (CTU) — Metro Line 7 to 太平园 (exit toward L2), transfer to Line 10 straight to the terminals; ~58 minutes. Because CTU is close, a taxi is also reasonable here. See our Shuangliu Airport (CTU) guide.

If your itinerary chains an HSR arrival at Chengdu East with an onward flight, budget at least 2.5-3 hours between the scheduled train arrival and the flight — more for an international departure from TFU, where the 75-minute bus plus check-in eats the margin fast.

To the Panda Base

Chengdu East and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding are both in Chenghua district, but the Panda Base is well to the north and there is no single fast metro line between them. The metro runs ~80-90 minutes (Line 7 to 驷马桥, transfer to Line 3 to 军区总医院 or 熊猫大道, then the 409 / 408 connector bus and the internal park walk).

For most travellers a taxi or DiDi is the better choice from the station — about 30-40 minutes — especially if you've just arrived and want to reach the base for the early-morning panda activity window. The full arrival detail (gates, the activity window, the connector buses) is in the panda guide.

High-speed routes from Chengdu East

Chengdu East is the HSR gateway for the whole southwest. Representative headline journeys for foreign travellers (confirm live when you book):

DestinationArrival stationTimeNotes
ChongqingChongqing North~1h 20mBusiest pair — ~10 G-trains/hr at peak; turn up and go.
Xi'anXi'an North~3.5-4hFor the Terracotta Warriors; through the Qinling mountains.
JiuzhaigouHuanglongjiuzhai~3h2023-opened HSR; transfer onward to the valley.
GuiyangGuiyang North~2.5-3hGateway onward to Guizhou.
ShanghaiShanghai Hongqiao~10-11hLong-haul; consider an overnight or a flight.
BeijingBeijing~8hFastest services on the newer alignment; most fly.

The Chengdu↔Chongqing corridor is the standout — roughly 10 G-trains an hour at peak, 1h 20m city-to-city, frequent enough to turn up and take the next train. See our Chengdu → Chongqing guide and the Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou guide, or the HSR Rail Map for the corridors.

Hotels near the station

Stay beside Chengdu East only if your train is genuinely early (before ~7am) or your arrival is very late. The immediate area — the West Plaza (西广场) on 嘉陵江路 / 沱江路 — is a transit-plaza zone: functional hotels, limited walkable food, no sights.

  • Longzhimeng (龙之梦) cluster — the 龙之梦 group runs several properties facing the station exit on 嘉陵江路 (the full-service 成都龙之梦大酒店, plus 瑞峰国际 and 雅仕商务), the most convenient walk-to-platform option for an awkward train time.
  • Budget chains & apartments — 7 Days Premium (7天优品), 嘉得利, and many serviced-apartment blocks around 锦绣大道.
  • No major mid-tier chain at the station: unlike some hubs, there's no 全季 / 亚朵 / 汉庭 right by Chengdu East within walking distance — another reason to stay central unless you need to be at the platform early.

Better for most visitors: Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li is only ~22 minutes away on Line 2 with vastly better food and atmosphere. Mainland chains book most reliably on Trip.com (English checkout, foreign-card payment); verify foreigner check-in before booking.

Practical: time, gates, booking

How much time to allow

Arrive 45-60 minutes before departure. The sequence: enter via a 进站口 (North or East entrance) → security X-ray → find your waiting zone → check-in gate (检票口 A2-A26 on 2F). Gates close 5 minutes before departure. The station is real-name (实名制): your passport is scanned at the gate as both ticket and ID, so carry the exact passport you booked with. Signage is bilingual (Chinese + English) throughout, with left-luggage, convenience stores and chain fast food on the waiting concourse.

The Chongqing corridor is forgiving. With ~10 trains an hour, a missed Chengdu↔Chongqing train is recoverable on a later service (you may pay a change fee). Long-haul routes (Shanghai, Beijing) are not — treat those gate times as fixed.

Booking — 12306 vs Trip.com

12306 (the official app/site) is the source of truth and now registers foreign passports, but the interface is Chinese-first, verification can be slow, and support is in Chinese. Trip.com sells the same 12306 seats with an English interface, foreign-card checkout, no verification wait, and 24-hour multilingual support — prices track 12306 and new-customer promos are often lower, and you can bundle a hotel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chengdu East the same as Chengdu South or Chengdu Railway Station?

No — Chengdu has several rail stations and they are not interchangeable, and mixing them up is the most common foreign-traveller error. Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站, Chenghua district) is the main high-speed-rail hub — most G-trains to Chongqing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Beijing, Guiyang, Kunming and the Jiuzhaigou HSR depart here. Chengdu South Station (成都南站) handles the Tianfu Airport metro Line 18 plus the Mt Emei and Leshan intercity trains. Chengdu Railway Station (成都站 / 火车北站) is the old conventional-rail terminal, mostly slower trains, under long-term reconstruction. Chengdu West (成都西站) handles some western-corridor services. Read the station name on your ticket — 成都东 / 成都南 / 成都 / 成都西 — they are far apart and on different metro lines.

How do I get from Chengdu East Railway Station to the city centre?

Metro. The 成都东客站 station sits directly under the rail concourse — follow the signs down, no need to leave the building. Line 2 (the east-west line) runs direct to Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li in about 22 minutes door-to-door with no transfer (use metro exit B), and to Tianfu Square in ~16 minutes. Line 7 is the orbital ring. Metro fare ¥2-7. A taxi or DiDi to the centre (Chunxi Road) is roughly ¥20-30 and ~18-30 minutes off-peak over about 7 km — quick by big-city standards because the station is closer to the centre (~7 km) than Guangzhou's or Beijing's main HSR stations.

Which trains leave from Chengdu East Railway Station?

Chengdu East is the high-speed hub for the whole southwest. Headline routes for foreign travellers: Chongqing (Chengdu East → Chongqing North, ~1h 20m by G-train, roughly 10 services an hour at peak — one of the densest intercity HSR pairs in western China); Xi'an (Chengdu East → Xi'an North, ~3.5-4h, for the Terracotta Warriors); Jiuzhaigou (Chengdu East → Huanglongjiuzhai, ~3h on the 2023-opened HSR, then a transfer to the valley); Shanghai (~10-11h); Beijing (~8h); plus Guiyang and Kunming. The Mt Emei and Leshan intercity trains depart Chengdu South Station, not Chengdu East — confirm the departure station on your ticket.

How do I get from Chengdu East to Tianfu Airport (TFU)?

The simplest path is the Tianfu Airport Express Bus Line 4 (天府国际机场公交专线4号线), which runs directly from the Chengdu East West Plaza (成都东客站西广场) to TFU — about 74 minutes in the bus (allow ~85 minutes door-to-door). One bus, no transfers, easiest with luggage. The metro alternative is Line 7 to Chengdu South (火车南站), then Line 18 to the airport — roughly 85-90 minutes. If you're chaining an HSR arrival at Chengdu East with an onward flight, budget at least 2.5-3 hours between the scheduled train arrival and the flight, more for an international departure.

How do I get from Chengdu East to Shuangliu Airport (CTU)?

Metro: Line 7 from Chengdu East to 太平园 (exit toward the platform marked L2), then transfer to Line 10 straight to the Shuangliu Airport terminals — about 58 minutes total. Because CTU is much closer to the city than TFU, a taxi is also a reasonable option here. Check which airport your flight uses: CTU (Shuangliu) is the older, closer airport now mostly handling short-haul domestic routes; TFU (Tianfu) is the newer airport far to the southeast for most international and long-haul flights.

How do I get from Chengdu East to the Panda Base?

Chengdu East and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding are both in Chenghua district, but the Panda Base is well to the north and there is no single fast metro line between them. The metro runs roughly 80-90 minutes (Line 7 to 驷马桥, transfer to Line 3 to 军区总医院 or 熊猫大道, then the 409 / 408 connector bus and the internal park walk). A taxi or DiDi is usually the better choice from the station — about 30-40 minutes — especially if you want to catch the early-morning panda activity window. See our where-to-see-pandas guide for the full arrival detail.

How much time should I allow at Chengdu East Station?

Allow 45-60 minutes from arriving at the station to boarding. Chengdu East is a large modern HSR station: you enter through a 进站口 (North or East entrance), pass security X-ray screening, find your waiting zone and check-in gate (检票口 A2-A26 on the 2F concourse), and gates close 5 minutes before departure. The station is real-name (实名制) — your passport is scanned at the gate as both ticket and ID, so carry the physical passport you booked with. The Chengdu↔Chongqing corridor is frequent enough that a missed train is recoverable; treat long-haul gate times (Shanghai, Beijing) as hard.

Should I stay near Chengdu East Railway Station?

Only if your train is genuinely early (before ~7am) or your arrival is very late. The immediate Chengdu East area (the West Plaza on 嘉陵江路 / 沱江路) is a transit-plaza zone — the hotels are the Longzhimeng (龙之梦) group plus budget chains and serviced apartments, with limited walkable food and no sightseeing. There's no major mid-tier chain right at the station. For any normal stay, Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li is only ~22 minutes away on Line 2 with far better food and atmosphere — stay central and accept one clean metro ride on travel day.
