Guangzhou to Macau: Train, Ferry & Bus (2026)
There is no single direct high-speed train — the smart route is the intercity train to Zhuhai and a short walk across the Gongbei border. Here is how each option compares.
By China for Travelers Editorial · Updated
Why there is no direct train
Macau (澳门) is a Special Administrative Region with its own border, so mainland high-speed trains stop at Zhuhai, the mainland city that wraps around Macau, rather than crossing into it. The good news: Zhuhai Station (珠海站) — the terminus of the Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity railway — is built right beside the Gongbei Port (拱北口岸), the busiest land crossing into Macau. So the train-plus-walk combination is fast and cheap.
The options compared
- Intercity train to Zhuhai + Gongbei walk (recommended) — Guangzhou South (or Guangzhou) to Zhuhai on the Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity line, about 1–1.5 hours and ¥70–80, then a short signed walk across the border. The most reliable and the easiest to time.
- Direct cross-border coach — through-buses run from points in Guangzhou to Macau (around 3 hours, ¥80–120). One vehicle, but slower and exposed to traffic and border queues.
- Ferry — limited sailings from Pearl-River-Delta ferry ports; usually less convenient than the train route for Guangzhou.
- Fly — there are short flights, but with two airport transfers plus the border it rarely beats the train for time or cost on this short hop.
Step by step: train + border
- Book the Guangzhou South → Zhuhai intercity train (or buy at the station). Aim for a service to Zhuhai (珠海), not Zhuhai North.
- At Zhuhai Station, follow signs to the Gongbei Port (拱北口岸) — it is adjacent to the station.
- Clear mainland Chinese exit control, then walk through to Macau entry control. Have your passport ready.
- On the Macau side you emerge in the Border Gate (Portas do Cerco) area; from there free casino shuttle buses, taxis and buses fan out across the peninsula and to Taipa/Cotai.
Visa & border notes
Macau runs its own immigration separate from mainland China. Most Western and Southeast Asian passports enter visa-free for 30–90 days — confirm your own nationality's rule before travelling. Crossing at Gongbei means a mainland exit stamp followed by a Macau entry stamp; if you plan to return to the mainland afterwards, remember you will need a valid mainland entry (a new visa or a valid multiple-entry status). If you are also visiting Hong Kong, the same separate-border logic applies.
Where to stay & what to do
Most visitors base on the Cotai Strip (the Taipa casino-resort zone) or in the historic Macau Peninsula near the Ruins of St Paul's and Senado Square. Compare Macau hotels on Trip.com → Many travellers do Macau as a day trip from Guangzhou or pair it with Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the fastest way from Guangzhou to Macau?
- For most independent travellers the quickest reliable route is the intercity train from Guangzhou South to Zhuhai (about 1 to 1.5 hours), then a 5-minute walk across the Gongbei border into Macau. Direct cross-border coaches also run but are slower and at the mercy of traffic and border queues; direct ferries are limited.
- Do I need a visa for Macau?
- Macau is a Special Administrative Region with its own immigration. Most Western passports (US, UK, EU, Australia, Singapore and many more) get visa-free stays of 30–90 days. You will clear mainland Chinese exit control and then Macau entry control — keep your passport handy. Always confirm your nationality’s current rules before you travel.
- How much does it cost?
- The Guangzhou South–Zhuhai intercity train is roughly ¥70–80 second class; the Gongbei crossing is free. A direct cross-border coach is around ¥80–120. Confirm fares when you book.
- Which Zhuhai station do I use for Macau?
- Zhuhai Station (珠海站), the southern terminus of the Guangzhou–Zhuhai intercity line, sits right next to the Gongbei Port (拱北口岸) — the main land border into Macau. Do not confuse it with Zhuhai North. From the station it is a short signed walk to immigration.
