Shenzhen to Macau: The Shekou Ferry (2026 Guide)

Shenzhen and Macau face each other across the Pearl River estuary, so the fast way over is the ferry — about an hour from Shekou or the airport — not an overland train.

By China for Travelers Editorial · Updated

Quick answer: Take the ferry across the estuary — from the Shekou Cruise Centre (or Shenzhen Bao'an Airport's Fuyong terminal) to Macau's Taipa Ferry Terminal, about 1–1.25 hrs, roughly ¥200–280. There is no direct train. Macau has its own immigration — most Western passports are visa-free.

Why it is a ferry, not a train

Shenzhen sits on the east side of the Pearl River estuary and Macau on the west; the mainland rail network does not bridge that water directly, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge connects Hong Kong, not Shenzhen. So the quick way across is by high-speed ferry. The main departure point is the Shekou Cruise Centre (蛇口邮轮中心) in Nanshan, western Shenzhen; there are also sailings from the ferry terminal at Shenzhen Bao'an Airport (Fuyong), handy if you are flying in and going straight to Macau.

The options compared

  • Shekou ferry (recommended) — Shekou Cruise Centre → Macau Taipa, ~1–1.25 hrs, ~¥200–280, several daily sailings. The fastest and most comfortable.
  • Airport ferry (Fuyong) — from Shenzhen Bao'an Airport's ferry terminal to Macau, useful for a fly-in/ferry-out connection without entering the city.
  • Overland via Zhuhai — long-distance bus around the top of the estuary to the Gongbei/Hengqin borders, ~3–4 hrs. Slower; only worth it if ferries are sold out or not running.

How the ferry trip works

  1. Get to the Shekou Cruise Centre — Shenzhen Metro Line 2 to Shekou Port, then a short walk; allow buffer time.
  2. Check in and clear mainland exit immigration at the terminal before boarding (your luggage is handled like an air/ferry trip).
  3. Sail ~1 hour to the Taipa Ferry Terminal and clear Macau entry — passport ready.
  4. From Taipa, free casino shuttle buses, taxis and public buses reach the Cotai resorts and the Macau Peninsula.

Visa & border notes

Macau is a Special Administrative Region with separate immigration; most Western and Southeast Asian passports get 30–90 days visa-free — check your own rule. Crossing from Shenzhen means a mainland exit, so if you intend to return to mainland China you need a valid mainland entry afterwards (a fresh visa or valid multiple-entry status). The same applies if you continue to Hong Kong.

Where to stay

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way from Shenzhen to Macau?
The classic route is the ferry across the Pearl River estuary — from the Shekou Cruise Centre in western Shenzhen (or from Shenzhen Bao’an Airport’s Fuyong terminal) to the Taipa Ferry Terminal in Macau, about 1 hour to 1 hour 15. There is no direct high-speed train, because Macau and Shenzhen sit on opposite sides of the estuary.
Do I need a visa for Macau, and what about returning to the mainland?
Macau has its own immigration; most Western and Southeast Asian passports enter visa-free for 30–90 days. Leaving Shenzhen for Macau is a mainland exit, so to come back into mainland China afterwards you need a valid mainland entry (a fresh visa or valid multiple-entry status). Confirm your nationality’s rules first.
How much is the ferry and how often does it run?
Expect roughly ¥200–280 one way depending on operator and class, with several daily sailings (more from the airport terminal). Book ahead on busy weekends and holidays. Confirm the current schedule and fare when you book — sailings change seasonally.
Can I go overland instead of by ferry?
You can, but it is slower: Shenzhen has no direct land link to Macau, so an overland trip loops up and around the estuary via Zhuhai by long-distance bus, typically 3–4 hours. For most travellers the ferry is faster and simpler.
