The route at a glance

Guangzhou to Shenzhen is one of the busiest passenger rail corridors on earth: 130 km, about 30m on the fastest G-trains, and roughly 507 trains a day each way from 06:00 – 23:26. There is no flight — the two megacities sit in the same delta and the train does the job a plane never could. As on the Shanghai–Suzhou hop, the only real planning question is which station at each end. Arriving into Guangzhou first? See the Guangzhou South station guide.

Which station — this is the whole decision

Both cities have multiple rail stations, and the “default” G-train pairing (Guangzhou South ↔ Shenzhen North) is not always the most convenient:

Shenzhen North 深圳北站most trains

The main G-train hub, in Longhua north of the centre (Metro Lines 4, 5 & 6). It has passport self-service machines on the ground floor, which speeds up collection. Line 4 runs direct to the Futian CBD.

Shenzhen Futian 福田站a few trains, downtown

Underground, in the central business district, and also the Hong Kong cross-border station. Some intercity trains from Guangzhou stop here. If your Shenzhen destination is downtown, or you are continuing to Hong Kong, aim for Futian.

At the Guangzhou end, services depart from Guangzhou South Railway Station (广州南站, Metro Lines 2, 7 & 22), well south of the old city; some intercity trains also use the more central Guangzhou East. Our route data tracks the Guangzhou South ↔ Shenzhen North trunk pairing because it carries the headline G-train frequency — but when you book, scan for services to Futian if the centre or Hong Kong is where you are headed.

Continuing to Hong Kong

This corridor is usually a leg of a bigger Pearl River Delta plan. From Shenzhen Futian 福田站, Hong Kong West Kowloon is about 15 minutes through co-located immigration (mainland exit and HK entry under one roof). Some trains also run Guangzhou South direct to Hong Kong West Kowloon in under an hour.

If Hong Kong is on your itinerary, read Guangzhou to Hong Kong by HSR for the passport and immigration specifics — the cross-border paperwork is the only part of Pearl River Delta rail that needs real attention.

Classes and price

For a 30-minute commuter ride the class barely matters, but for completeness:

Second classmost buy¥72 – ¥753+2 seating, power at every seat — what almost everyone buys.
First class¥90 – ¥1002+2 seating; marginal benefit on such a short hop.
Business class¥200Not worth it for half an hour, but available on some departures.

How to book with a foreign passport

12306 English app — the official China Railway channel: face-value fares, no booking fee. The trade-off is hassle — passport registration must be approved before you can buy (often slow), and customer service is Chinese-first and limited if a booking goes wrong.

Trip.com ↗ — the same China Railway seats, booked in English with a foreign Visa or Mastercard, no verification wait and 24/7 multilingual support. Prices track 12306, and with new-customer promotions Trip often comes out level or cheaper. As China’s largest OTA you can also add hotels, attraction tickets and tours to the same trip. Real-name rule — the name and passport number on the ticket must match what you present; e-tickets are scanned at the gate, no paper pickup needed.

Arrived at Shenzhen North — getting into the city

Shenzhen North Railway Station (深圳北站) is in Longhua, north of the CBD, so the metro is the fast way in — Lines 4, 5 and 6 all serve it, and Line 4 runs direct to Futian. The DiDi pickup zone is on the underground B1 level, signed “网约车”; the taxi rank is on the east plaza at street level. Times below are for the areas foreign visitors most often stay.

Frequently asked questions

About 130 km (81 miles) — roughly 30 minutes on the fast G/C-trains.

How do I get from Guangzhou to Shenzhen?

By high-speed train. G- and C-trains run Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North about 507 times a day, taking ~30 minutes, from ¥72 in second class. Book on the official 12306 app or on Trip.com, or simply turn up and take the next one.

How long is the Guangzhou to Shenzhen train?

The fastest G-trains do Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North in about 30 minutes; most run 30–50 minutes. There are also slower intercity services to more central Shenzhen Futian and downtown Guangzhou East — useful if your start or end point is in the city centre.

How often do trains run between Guangzhou and Shenzhen?

From Guangzhou South you can also ride straight through to Hong Kong West Kowloon.

Can I continue from Shenzhen to Hong Kong by train?

Yes. Shenzhen Futian connects to Hong Kong West Kowloon in about 15 minutes through co-located immigration, and some trains run Guangzhou South direct to Hong Kong. See our Guangzhou to Hong Kong guide for the cross-border details.

Verification scope

Route data — distance, journey time, fare bands and daily frequencies — is sampled from China’s national rail system and refreshed monthly. Shenzhen metro lines and taxi distances are from Amap (高德地图) routing, checked 2026-06-14.

Confirm before booking: most G-trains use Shenzhen North (深圳北), but a few use central Futian (福田) — the handier station for the CBD or onward Hong Kong. Check the stations printed on your ticket.
