Chongqing Jiangbei Airport (CKG) Guide 2026: Transfers, Hotels
The foreigner's guide to CKG — T2 / T3A / T3B terminals, Line 10 direct to downtown (33 min to HSR, 50 min to Jiefangbei), VAT refund first-hand verified, DiDi pickup zones, and the layover guide for 4 / 8 / 12 hour stays — by an editor based in Chongqing since 2018.
By China for Travelers Editorial · Published · Updated
This guide is written by a Singapore passport holder based in Chongqing since 2018 (8 years on the ground). CKG is my home airport — I've used it ~40 times for domestic and international trips since 2018, including the dated VAT refund observation cited below (2026-02-19, ¥282 net on ¥3,200 of eligible purchases at T3A). Walking and transit times from Amap (高德地图) routing 2026-05-21; driving distances and DiDi pickup zone locations cross-checked against first-hand recent travel.
The three terminals — which one is yours?
CKG operates three terminals connected by an inter-terminal shuttle and by the metro Line 10:
- Terminal 2 (T2) — the older, smaller terminal. Handles some domestic carriers including Chongqing Airlines and certain budget operators. If you booked a cheaper domestic ticket on a smaller carrier, you may be at T2.
- Terminal 3A (T3A) — the main terminal, opened 2017. Handles the majority of CKG's domestic flights plus historically all international flights. Most foreign travelers arrive and depart from T3A. The VAT refund counter, the main DiDi GTC, and the largest in-terminal hotel cluster are all at T3A.
- Terminal 3B (T3B) — the newest, opened 2024 for international growth. New international routes increasingly use T3B as the international apron expands. Connected to T3A by a walkway (you don't need a separate shuttle to move between T3A and T3B).
Your boarding pass shows the terminal. Confirm with your driver if you're being picked up. Metro Line 10 has separate stations for T3 (serving both T3A and T3B) and T2 — one stop apart on the same line. If you arrive at the wrong terminal's metro station, walk back through the airside transfer area or take the inter-terminal shuttle (free, every 10-15 min).

Getting from CKG to central Chongqing
By metro (Line 10 — the recommended default)
Metro Line 10 connects CKG T3 and T2 directly to central Chongqing, with the airport stations on the northern end of the line. Key destinations from the airport:
- Chongqing North Railway Station (HSR) — ~33 min direct, zero transfers. Exit at 重庆北站北广场for North Plaza or 重庆北站南广场 for South Plaza — check your HSR ticket for which plaza. See our Chongqing North guide.
- Jiefangbei CBD — ~50-55 min via Line 10 → transfer at 曾家岩 (Zengjiayan) → Line 2 → 临江门 (Linjiangmen). Walk 5-10 min to most hotels.
- Hongyadong night view — same routing as Jiefangbei, then walk 10 min north downhill from Linjiangmen. Total ~60 min from airport arrival hall.
- Liziba monorail — Line 10 → Line 2 at 曾家岩, then one more stop on Line 2 to Liziba. ~55 min. See our Liziba monorail guide.
- Guanyinqiao (Jiangbei CBD) — Line 10 → transfer at 红土地 to Line 6 or via Line 3 from a different route, ~30 min direct via Line 3 if you exit at the right station. Easiest taxi area for the CKG.
- Nan'an / Nanbin Road — Line 10 direct south to 后堡 (Houbao). ~55 min. Single line, no transfers — easy with luggage.
Metro fare is ¥6-8 depending on distance, paid via Alipay QR code or single-trip ticket at the kiosks. Trains run roughly 6:30am to 11pm. The line has English station-name signs.
By taxi / DiDi
To Jiefangbei: ~50 min off-peak, ¥80-120 metered fare. Avoid the 5-7pm rush hour — the Yu-Yu Expressway connecting the airport to downtown gets congested and the ride can stretch to 90 minutes.
DiDi pickup zones at each terminal:
- T3A: Ground Transportation Center (GTC) at arrival level, follow signs to 网约车 / Online Ride- hailing. Exit 5-7 area outside arrival hall, white-and- blue signage.
- T3B: Similar GTC zone at the new terminal's arrival level. Signs guide you.
- T2: GTC just outside the arrival hall main exit.
Foreign credit card via Alipay International works on DiDi at CKG as of 2026 (editor verified multiple times). Download DiDi Rider (the international app — NOT the Chinese DiDi app, which is a different product) before you land. See our DiDi for Foreigners guide for the full setup.
Official taxi rank is also at the GTC if you prefer a metered cab without the app. Insist on the meter (“打表”, dǎ biǎo) — Chongqing taxi drivers are mostly camera-monitored and the meter behavior is honest, but the rare scam scenario is a flat-fare offer at the rank. Decline and ask for the meter.
By airport shuttle bus
Airport buses run to various Chongqing destinations (Jiefangbei, Shapingba, Yongchuan, etc.). Useful if metro is closed or your luggage is heavy and DiDi is delayed. Fares ¥15-30 depending on route. Slower than metro, comparable to taxi for the same downtown destinations. Pickup at the GTC area.
Getting from CKG to onward HSR — verify your station first
If your trip plan is fly-in to CKG then HSR onwards, which Chongqing HSR station you target matters a lot. The three stations have very different metro times from CKG:
- Chongqing North (重庆北站) — ~33 min direct Line 10 from CKG, zero transfers. The fastest connection in the city. Use this station whenever your ticket allows.
- Chongqing West (重庆西站) — ~84 min metro from CKG (Line 10 → 中央公园西 transfer → Line 5). Used only for specific Chengdu G-trains that depart from here.
- Chongqing East (重庆东站) — ~85-90 min metro with three subway segments. Used only for Yu-Xiang line services to Changsha or selected southeastern destinations.
Verify the Chinese station name on your HSR ticket — 重庆北 / 重庆西 / 重庆东 are not interchangeable. See our 12306 English app guide or 12306 vs Trip.com comparison for the booking verification flow.
Onward connections — popular routes from CKG via HSR
CKG → metro to Chongqing North → HSR onwards is one of China's most efficient airport-to-HSR pipelines. The high-value onward routes:
- To Chengdu East — Chongqing North to Chengdu East G-train ~1h 20m. Total CKG → Chengdu door-to- door: ~2h 30m including the metro to Chongqing North and HSR time. See our Chengdu ↔ Chongqing by HSR guide.
- To Wulong Karst UNESCO — HSR direct from Chongqing North to Wulong, 40-50 min. Day-trip pairing with CKG layovers is workable: fly into CKG morning, metro to North, HSR to Wulong, see the three natural bridges, return same day. See our Wulong Karst day trip guide.
- To Yichang East (Yangtze cruise upstream port) — HSR from Chongqing North (5-6 hours) connects to the cruise departures from Yichang. See our Yangtze River Cruise guide. Note that some Yichang services may now route via Chongqing East — verify your ticket.
In-terminal services
SIM cards / connectivity
China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom kiosks at T3A and T3B arrival levels — typically near the GTC / arrival exit area. Foreigners can buy a tourist SIM with passport verification; allow 15-20 min for setup. English support varies by kiosk staff.
Better in 2026: pre-buy an eSIM. Trip.com sells China-compatible eSIMs that activate on arrival (the affiliate account is live, so this is a working purchase path). Holafly / Airalo / Nomad all sell China travel eSIMs activated over hotel Wi-Fi before boarding — those route via foreign carriers so Google / WhatsApp / Instagram work without a VPN. See our China SIM vs eSIM guide for the full comparison and our connectivity hub.
Currency exchange
Bank of China and ICBC exchange counters at T3A arrival level. ATMs accept foreign-issued cards in most cases (Visa / Mastercard / UnionPay; American Express less reliable in 2026). The smartest move for most foreign travelers is to skip cash entirely and rely on Alipay International + a foreign card — see our Alipay for Foreigners guide.
Lounges
T3A and T3B both have multiple lounges accessible via Priority Pass, DragonPass, and airline status. Editor has personally used the DragonPass lounge at T3A international departures multiple times — comfortable, reasonable food selection. T3B lounges expanded with the 2024 terminal opening.
VAT tax refund counter (editor verified)
Location: T3A departures level, near the international check-in zone. Signposted “Tax Refund / 退税” in English and Chinese.
Editor first-hand: On 2026-02-19 I claimed a ¥282 net VAT refund (11% on ¥3,200 of eligible purchases at participating Chongqing retailers). Total time at the counter: ~25 minutes, including customs stamping and the tax-refund- counter payment. The process:
- Shop at retailers displaying the “Tax Free” sign, ask for the VAT refund form at checkout when your same-day purchase exceeds ¥500
- At the airport on departure day, present the form + receipts + unused goods at the customs counter for stamping
- Proceed to the tax refund counter for the cash or card-credit refund (¥282 in my 2026-02-19 case)
Allow 60-90 minutes earlier than your normal check-in time to handle the refund queue. See our China departure checklist for the full step-by-step.
Hotels at and near CKG
Five accommodation options were returned by Amap within 2 km of CKG, all inside the terminal complex itself:
- 美宸酒店 (Meichen Hotel, T3 国内到达层) — proper hotel at the T3 domestic arrival level. Compact but real hotel rooms.
- 紫宸酒店 (Zichen Hotel) at T3 paid parking level 3. Slightly bigger property.
- 片刻居所计时休息 (T3A 国内到达 2 层 6 号门旁) — hourly-rest capsule-style facility for short layovers.
- 刻睡小屋 at the T3 渝航大道 area — similar hourly-rest concept.
There is no major international chain hotel (Hilton / Marriott / Hyatt) at CKG itself. The closest chain hotels in 2026 are in Guanyinqiao (~20 min taxi or Line 3 metro) or central Chongqing. For a long red-eye layover or early departure, the in-terminal options are practical; for an overnight pre-flight stay, you might prefer Guanyinqiao for chain-hotel quality at similar prices. See our Where to Stay in Chongqing guide.

Late-night arrivals and red-eye departures
Metro Line 10 closes around 11pm. After that:
- DiDi runs 24h. Pickup zones at the GTC are staffed but quieter. Allow longer wait times for a driver to arrive at 1-3am.
- Airport hotel rooms — Meichen and Zichen are useful for an arrival-late, fly-out-early scenario. Book ahead via Trip.com for around ¥400-700/night peak.
- Capsule / hourly-rest — 片刻居所计时休息 and 刻睡小屋 are ¥80-150 for 4-6 hour blocks. Useful for transit scenarios.
For payment setup before you fly, see our China Pre-Trip Checklist — Alipay International binding takes 22-72 hours and cannot easily be done from inside China without a Chinese bank account.
Layover guide — what you can do with 4 / 8 / 12 hours
China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy applies to most Western nationalities at CKG (Chongqing is an approved transit port). See our China 240-hour transit guide for eligibility — and use the 240-hour transit tool to verify your specific case.
Rough scope by layover length:
- 4 hours total layover — stay airside or inside the terminal. Eat at the T3A food court, rest at a capsule kiosk, browse the Tax Free shops at departures. Don't attempt a downtown trip — the metro round-trip alone eats 2 hours.
- 6-8 hours total layover — possible to do a Hongyadong night-view loop if your layover overlaps 6-9pm. Line 10 + Line 2 to Linjiangmen, walk to Hongyadong for photos at the 7pm light-up, hot pot dinner at Bayi Lu, then metro back. Allow 3.5-4 hours total round-trip.
- 10-12 hours total layover — a fuller half- day. Jiefangbei + Liziba monorail + Hongyadong evening + dinner is achievable. Pre-plan the metro routes to avoid transfer confusion. Carry your passport (real-name registration at the metro and any hotel is required).
- 24+ hours layover — fully use the 240-hour transit, drop luggage at Chongqing North left-luggage counter, and treat Chongqing as a one-night stop. See our Chongqing city hub for what to see.
