Chongqing North Railway Station: exits, metro, hotels

They're two physically separated entrances to the same station, on opposite sides of the tracks — but they're connected inside and BOTH serve every train (high-speed and conventional), so picking the right one only saves walking, it never decides which train you can catch. The reliable way to tell which side you need is the gate number on your ticket, not the plaza name: locals use '南大北小' (south=big, north=small) — gates 1-13 enter from the North Plaza, gates 14-26 from the South Plaza. The two sides also have different metro lines: North Plaza (北广场) = Line 10 + Line 4 (Line 10 runs direct to CKG airport in ~32 min); South Plaza (南广场) = Line 3, Line 10, and the Loop Line (环线). For the entrance closest to security, take North Plaza Exit 5 or South Plaza Exit 6/7. Build 15-20 minutes of buffer your first time.

Metro Line 10 directly. From CKG T2 or T3 take Line 10 toward Wangjiazhuang (王家庄), exit at 重庆北站北广场 (Chongqing North Railway Station North Plaza). The ride takes ~32 minutes and costs ¥6-7. Zero transfers — this is the simplest airport-to-HSR connection in Chongqing. If your HSR departs from South Plaza, you have two options: (a) get off at 重庆北站南广场 instead, one stop earlier on Line 10, or (b) cross over after arriving — walk the underground passage (~15-20 minutes with luggage) or ride Line 10 one stop between the two plaza stations (~2 min, easier with bags). The metro runs roughly 6:30am to 11pm.

Chongqing North is the primary HSR terminus for the Chengdu-Chongqing line (most G-trains to Chengdu East in 1h 20m), trains to Beijing West via Zhengzhou (~7 hours on the 郑渝 line), Shanghai via Wuhan, Guangzhou via Guiyang, and the regional services to Wulong (40-50 minutes, the access point for Wulong Karst UNESCO), Yichang (~4.5 hours by D-train via 利川/恩施, the upstream end of Yangtze cruises), Zigong, Suining, Nanchong, and Dazhou. Faster Chengdu services in 2024-2025 began also using Chongqing West and Shapingba — check your ticket for which station, they are NOT interchangeable.

Yes. Best value is an Atour (亚朵), with one on each side so you can match your gate: the North Plaza Atour (opened 2025, ~900m) for gates 1-13, or the South Plaza Atour (opened 2022, ~780m) for gates 14-26. For cheaper rooms, the North Plaza's Huayu Motian (华宇摩天) tower at Tianxi Road 1 packs an economy cluster (7 Days, Lavanda 麗枫, Greentree Eastern 格林东方 and similar) into one elevator core — but check the live listing first, as travellers report several have closed or rebranded. Note the old 7 Days inside the station on B1 has CLOSED, so don't count on sleeping in the station for a midnight arrival. International luxury chains (Niccolo / Hyatt / etc.) aren't here — taxi to Jiefangbei or Guanyinqiao for those.

Metro Line 10 north plaza → 曾家岩 (Zengjiayan) → transfer to Line 2 → 临江门 (Linjiangmen). Total ~28 minutes including the transfer, ¥4-5 fare. From South Plaza: Line 3 to the 临江门 area takes a similar duration via a different routing. Taxi is faster door-to-door (~20-25 min off-peak) but unpredictable in evening congestion; it's only ~8.8 km, so the meter runs about ¥20-30.

Eat in the in-station food zone before boarding, or at the underground mall on B1 connecting the two plazas. The immediate surroundings of the station (within 500m) have surprisingly few restaurants — only 3 POIs returned from a 2026 Amap search, mostly hotel restaurants. Domestic chains inside the station (Lao Xiang Ji 老乡鸡, Wallace 华莱士, Real Kung Fu 真功夫, and a Sichuan-noodle counter) cover the basics for ¥25-50. There's also a McDonald's and KFC on the South Plaza side. Don't expect Chongqing hot pot at the station — it's not the food scene here.

Domestic HSR trains close gates 5 minutes before departure (officially) but the real-name verification + bag-check queues can swallow 15-30 minutes at peak hours. Aim to be at the correct plaza 30-40 minutes before departure for Chinese passport holders on weekdays; 45-60 minutes if you're a foreign passport holder (manual passport scanning is slower than the auto-gates that Chinese ID cards use). On Golden Week and Spring Festival days, double those buffers. Tickets are scanned at the gate by passport for foreigners, and again at the train carriage door by the conductor.

Yes — and this is one of the best day-trip pairings in Chongqing.
