Chongqing North Railway Station: Exits, Metro, Hotels 2026

The two-plaza problem, Line 10 direct to CKG airport, the Huayu Motian hotel tower, and how to reach Jiefangbei / Wulong / Chengdu — by an editor who has boarded and alighted here 30+ times since 2018.

By China for Travelers Editorial · Published · Updated

This guide is written by a Singapore passport holder based in Chongqing since 2018 (8 years on the ground). I've boarded and alighted at this station 30+ times for Chengdu day-trips, Wulong UNESCO day-trips, and the multi-day Yangtze cruise (departing from Chongqing's Chaotianmen Port after an HSR arrival at North Plaza). The two-plaza confusion described below is the single most common mistake I see foreign visitors make at this station — I've personally helped four lost foreign travelers find the correct plaza since 2023. Walking and metro times below are from Amap (高德地图) routing 2026-05-21.

The single most important thing — the two-plaza problem

Chongqing North Railway Station is one physical HSR station withtwo physically separated street-level entrances:

  • North Plaza (北广场, Běi Guǎngchǎng) — on the north side of the tracks. Served by metro Line 10. Most direct connection to CKG airport (Line 10 direct, no transfer).
  • South Plaza (南广场, Nán Guǎngchǎng) — on the south side of the tracks. Served by metro Line 3, Line 6, and Line 10 (Line 10 stops at both plaza stations). Closer to central Chongqing.

From street level you cannot see one plaza from the other — they look like two completely separate stations and are about 800m apart across the tracks, connected only by an underground passage (signposted but not obvious if you're moving with luggage). The metro stations on each side are also named differently — 重庆北站北广场 (Line 10) and 重庆北站南广场 (Line 3/6/10) — which makes the confusion worse on the metro map.

Your printed HSR ticket specifies which plaza — usually written in small Chinese as 北广场 or 南广场 on the ticket itself or in the SMS / app booking confirmation. Trip.com and 12306 don't consistently translate the plaza name in their English UI, so foreign passengers commonly walk to the wrong plaza first. Build in 15-20 minutes of buffer time if you've never been to this station before; if you arrive at the wrong plaza, the underground transfer passage is the fastest way over — about 10-15 minutes' walk with luggage. Taxis cannot enter directly from one plaza to the other (they have to drive a 5-7 km loop around).

One useful heuristic if your ticket is unreadable: most high-frequency Chengdu G-trains depart from the South Plaza side of the platform array; most Wulong / Yichang / regional trains depart from the North Plaza side. But verify on the ticket; the assignments shift.

Getting from CKG airport to Chongqing North

The simplest airport-to-HSR transfer in Chongqing.

  • Metro Line 10 direct: From CKG T2 or T3, board Line 10 toward Wangjiazhuang (王家庄). Exit at 重庆北站北广场 if your HSR departs from North Plaza (~33 min, ¥6-7), or one stop earlier at 重庆北站南广场 if your HSR departs from South Plaza. Zero transfers.
  • Taxi / DiDi: ~25 minutes off-peak, ¥80-110. Useful if you arrive at the airport past 11pm and the metro has stopped running, or if you have more luggage than the metro turnstile gates can handle gracefully.
  • Airport shuttle bus: There is a CKG-to-North- Plaza airport bus but the metro is faster, cheaper, and more reliable; skip the bus unless the metro is closed.

Recommended buffer: Add 90 minutes between your CKG arrival (after baggage claim) and your HSR scheduled departure. 33-min metro + 15-min navigation buffer + 30-min gate-and-bag check + 10-min unforeseen. If your HSR departs from South Plaza and your metro exit was at North Plaza, factor in an extra 15 minutes for the inter-plaza transfer.

Getting from Chongqing North to central Chongqing

To Jiefangbei (Yuzhong Peninsula CBD)

Metro Line 10 from North Plaza → transfer at 曾家岩 (Zengjiayan) → Line 2 → 临江门 (Linjiangmen). Total ~31 minutes, ¥4-5 fare. From South Plaza, Line 3 reaches the same Linjiangmen via a slightly different routing in ~28 minutes. Walking from Linjiangmen exit to most central hotels is 5-10 minutes.

See our Where to Stay in Chongqing guide for which neighborhood to base in.

To Hongyadong

Same Line 10 → Line 2 routing — exit at Linjiangmen on Line 2, walk ~10 minutes north downhill to Hongyadong. Allow ~40-45 minutes door-to-door from arrival hall.

To Liziba monorail

Line 10 → Line 2 → Liziba (Line 2). ~30 minutes. The viral train-through-a-building is one stop past Linjiangmen on Line 2. See our Liziba monorail guide.

To Nan'an / Nanbin Road (south bank)

Line 10 direct from North Plaza to 后堡 (Houbao) on Line 10. ~28 minutes. The Nanbin Road dinner strip and the Chongqing Eye observation platform are within 10-15 minutes' walk from there.

To Shapingba (西side, university district)

Line 10 → transfer at 红土地 (Hongtudi) → Line 6 → transfer at Sigongli (四公里) → Loop Line. ~46 minutes with two transfers. If your final destination is the Shapingba HSR station itself (for a Chengdu connection), it's faster to take an HSR directly from Chongqing North to Chongqing West / Shapingba (~25 min) or to taxi (~35 min) than to use the metro.

HSR routes from Chongqing North

The Chongqing North-departing routes most relevant to foreign travelers:

  • Chengdu East (成都东) — most G-trains, 1h 20m. Departures roughly every 15-30 minutes through the day. See our Chengdu to Chongqing HSR guide. Note: some faster 2024-2025 Chengdu services now depart from Chongqing West or Shapingba instead — verify your ticket.
  • Wulong (武隆) — 40-50 minutes by HSR. The access point for Wulong Karst UNESCO three-natural-bridges. See our Wulong Karst day trip guide for the round-trip logistics.
  • Yichang East (宜昌东) — 5-6 hours. The upstream port for Yangtze River cruises. See our Yangtze River Cruise guide.
  • Xi'an North — 5-6 hours via the Chongqing-Xi'an HSR line, opened 2023.
  • Beijing West — ~12 hours via Xi'an, with a few daily G-trains.
  • Shanghai — ~13-15 hours via Wuhan, multiple daily G-trains.
  • Guangzhou — ~8-9 hours via Guiyang.

Hotels within 1km of the station

Chongqing North has an unusually dense hotel cluster — about 15-20 small-to-mid hotel brands operate inside a single high-rise mixed-use tower called 华宇摩天 (Huayu Motian) at Tianxi Road 1, on the North Plaza side. The brands include 7 Days, Lavanda (麗枫), V9 Art, Greentree Eastern (格林东方), Vienna affiliates, Speed 8, plus several electronic-competition / boutique-modern chains popular with younger Chinese travelers.

The cluster pattern is unusual for China — typically you have one or two big hotels right at a station, then a 1-2 km dead zone. Here you have 15+ choices in a single elevator core, all with windows looking out at the station. The trade-off: this is functional-not-premium territory. The Huayu Motian tower itself is utilitarian and the rooms are typical Chinese mid- tier business chains. Don't expect Niccolo / Hyatt / JW Marriott quality.

There's also a 7 Days hotel inside the station on B1 (basement floor 1), useful if your train arrives past midnight or you have a pre-dawn departure and don't want to manage a check-in transfer.

For a foreigner-friendly luxury or international-chain stay, you would not stay at this station. Taxi to Jiefangbei (~25 min, ¥40-60) or Guanyinqiao (~20 min, ¥35-50) instead. See our Where to Stay in Chongqing guide for those neighborhoods.

Food at the station

Plan to eat at the station rather than venture out. The immediate surroundings within 500m have surprisingly few restaurants — Amap returned only 3 POIs from a May 2026 search, mostly hotel restaurants in the Huayu Motian tower. The rail-station-area food vacuum is a real thing in Chongqing.

Inside the station and the underground mall connecting the two plazas:

  • Domestic chain quick-service: Lao Xiang Ji (老乡鸡), Wallace (华莱士), Real Kung Fu (真功夫), KFC, McDonald's — all in the ¥25-50 range, English-or-pictures menus available
  • Sichuan-noodle counters: Several small shops doing 重庆小面 (Chongqing xiao mian) for ¥15-25. Functional, not destination-quality
  • Convenience stores: 7-Eleven and FamilyMart on B1 — useful for water, snacks, and prepackaged tea-eggs / bao for a long train

Don't expect Chongqing hot pot at the station. The local hot-pot scene is in Yuzhong (Bayi Lu strip), Jiangbei (Guanyinqiao mall complexes), and on the south bank (Nanbin Road). The station area is utility food.

Late-night arrivals

The latest HSR arrivals into Chongqing North are typically around 11pm. After ~11pm:

  • Metro is closed — Line 10 and Line 3 both stop running between 11pm and 11:30pm depending on the day
  • DiDi is available — official taxi rank is outside North Plaza Exit 1A; DiDi pickup zone is the same area, marked with blue signage. Foreign card via Alipay International works (verified 2026 by this editor)
  • Stay at the 7 Days B1 — book in advance for ¥150-250/night if your next connection is early morning. Saves the taxi-back-to-station drama

For payment setup before you fly, see our Alipay for Foreigners guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are Chongqing North Railway Station's North Plaza and South Plaza the same station?
Yes and no. They're two physically separated entrances to the same HSR station, on opposite sides of the tracks, connected only by an underground passage. From street level you cannot see one from the other — they look like two different stations. Crucially they have different metro lines: North Plaza (北广场) is served by Line 10 (which goes direct to CKG Jiangbei Airport in ~33 minutes, no transfer); South Plaza (南广场) is served by Line 3, Line 6, and Line 10 also stops here. Your printed HSR ticket specifies which plaza you depart from — usually written as 北广场 or 南广场. Arriving foreigners often walk to the wrong plaza first because Trip.com and 12306 don't translate the plaza name in their English UI. Build in 15-20 minutes of buffer if it's your first time at this station.
How do I get from Chongqing Jiangbei Airport (CKG) to Chongqing North Railway Station?
Metro Line 10 directly. From CKG T2 or T3 take Line 10 toward Wangjiazhuang (王家庄), exit at 重庆北站北广场 (Chongqing North Railway Station North Plaza). The ride takes ~33 minutes and costs ¥6-7. Zero transfers — this is the simplest airport-to-HSR connection in Chongqing. If your HSR departs from South Plaza, you have two options: (a) get off at 重庆北站南广场 instead, one stop earlier on Line 10, or (b) walk the underground passage between the plazas (~10-15 minutes). The metro runs roughly 6:30am to 11pm.
Which HSR trains depart from Chongqing North Railway Station?
Chongqing North is the primary HSR terminus for the Chengdu-Chongqing line (most G-trains to Chengdu East in 1h 20m), trains to Beijing West via Xi'an (~12 hours), Shanghai via Wuhan, Guangzhou via Guiyang, and the regional services to Wulong (40-50 minutes, the access point for Wulong Karst UNESCO), Yichang (5-6 hours, the upstream end of Yangtze cruises), Zigong, Suining, Nanchong, and Dazhou. Faster Chengdu services in 2024-2025 began also using Chongqing West and Shapingba — check your ticket for which station, they are NOT interchangeable.
Are there hotels right at Chongqing North Railway Station?
Yes — an unusually dense cluster on the North Plaza side. A single high-rise building called Huayu Motian (华宇摩天) at Tianxi Road 1 hosts 15+ small-to-mid hotel brands operating on different floors: 7 Days, Lavanda (麗枫), V9 Art, Greentree Eastern (格林东方), Vienna affiliates, Speed 8, Atour-style modern boutique chains, plus several internet-cafe-style 'electronic competition' hotels for younger Chinese travelers. The vibe is convenience-over-quality — these are functional rather than premium. There is also a 7 Days outlet inside the station on B1 (basement 1), useful if you arrive past midnight. International luxury chains (Niccolo / Hyatt / etc.) are not in this neighborhood; you would need to taxi to Jiefangbei or Guanyinqiao.
What's the best route from Chongqing North to Jiefangbei?
Metro Line 10 north plaza → 曾家岩 (Zengjiayan) → transfer to Line 2 → 临江门 (Linjiangmen). Total ~31 minutes including the transfer, ¥4-5 fare. From South Plaza: Line 3 to 临江门 area takes a similar duration via a different routing. Taxi is faster door-to-door (~25 min off-peak) but unpredictable in evening congestion; meter fare runs ¥40-60 plus a possible ¥3 fuel surcharge.
Where do I eat at Chongqing North Railway Station?
Eat in the in-station food zone before boarding, or at the underground mall on B1 connecting the two plazas. The immediate surroundings of the station (within 500m) have surprisingly few restaurants — only 3 POIs returned from a 2026 Amap search, mostly hotel restaurants. Domestic chains inside the station (Lao Xiang Ji 老乡鸡, Wallace 华莱士, Real Kung Fu 真功夫, and a Sichuan-noodle counter) cover the basics for ¥25-50. There's also a McDonald's and KFC on the South Plaza side. Don't expect Chongqing hot pot at the station — it's not the food scene here.
How early should I arrive at Chongqing North for an HSR train?
Domestic HSR trains close gates 5 minutes before departure (officially) but the real-name verification + bag-check queues can swallow 15-30 minutes at peak hours. Aim to be at the correct plaza 30-40 minutes before departure for Chinese passport holders on weekdays; 45-60 minutes if you're a foreign passport holder (manual passport scanning is slower than the auto-gates that Chinese ID cards use). On Golden Week and Spring Festival days, double those buffers. Tickets are scanned at the gate by passport for foreigners, and again at the train carriage door by the conductor.
Can I take the HSR from Chongqing North directly to Wulong Karst?
Yes — and this is one of the best day-trip pairings in Chongqing. The HSR from Chongqing North to Wulong (武隆) runs 40-50 minutes, the shuttle bus from Wulong HSR station to the Three Natural Bridges UNESCO zone runs frequent. See our Wulong Karst day trip guide for the specific train and bus schedule, plus how the round-trip-from-Chongqing logistics actually work.
