Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) Guide 2026: Express, Hotels

The PKX-is-not-PEK alert, single Zaha-Hadid starfish terminal, Daxing Airport Express ¥35 to central Beijing, why PKX beats PEK for Beijing South connections, in-terminal hotels, and where DiDi picks you up.

By China for Travelers Editorial · Published · Updated

This guide is written by an editorial team based in Chongqing — the editor has lived in mainland China since 2018 (8 years on the ground) but is not a Beijing resident. First-hand familiarity with PKX covers 2024-2026 transit flights via China Southern (one Chongqing-PKX-Tokyo connection, two Chongqing-PKX intra-China connections) and one Daxing Airport Express ride from PKX to 草桥. Day-to-day operational nuance draws on aggregated 2024-2026 r/Beijing and r/Flying threads, Trip.com listings, and 2026-05-21 Amap (高德地图) walking + transit-routing data. Path-2 editorial- aggregated for in-terminal hotels and routine PKX departure patterns — first-hand transits but not first-hand extended PKX-area stays.

PKX vs PEK — read this first

Beijing has two major international airports, and they are not interchangeable. The single most common foreigner mistake at Beijing aviation is arriving at the wrong one. Confirm which airport your boarding pass lists before you book your taxi or set your phone alarm.

AirportIATALocationTypical carriersBest central-Beijing strength
PEKPEK / ZBAA~30 km NE of Tiananmen (Chaoyang + Shunyi)Air China, Star Alliance (United, Lufthansa, ANA, Singapore), oneworld (BA, Cathay, JAL, AA, QF)Wangfujing (62 min), Sanlitun (48 min), CBD (48 min)
PKXPKX / ZBAD~46 km S of Tiananmen (Daxing district)China Southern (hub), some China Eastern, Hainan, Capital, Hebei + Korean/Russian carriersBeijing South Station (40 min), CBD (60 min)

PEK ↔ PKX inter-airport transfer takes ~90-120 minutes by taxi or 2+ hours by metro. If you have a connecting flight on different airports, treat them as fully separate journeys — build in 4 hours minimum buffer.

A single starfish terminal — no T1/T2/T3 confusion

Unlike PEK's multi-terminal sprawl, PKX is a single mega-terminal designed by Zaha Hadid Architects + ADP Ingénierie, opened in 2019. The starfish- shaped layout has six radiating concourses (A through F), but all share a single check-in hall, single security checkpoint, and single immigration zone for international departures.

The practical effect: shorter walks than PEK T3 despite the larger floor area. Center-of-terminal to farthest gate is ~600m at PKX versus ~1 km at PEK T3. The radial design means each concourse is at most 4-5 minutes' walk from the central check-in atrium. No inter-terminal shuttle buses to worry about.

Your boarding pass lists the gate letter + number (e.g., D52, A33, E12). Wayfinding is consistent and bilingual (Chinese + English) throughout. The architectural spectacle of the central atrium — natural light, curved beams, terminating skylight — is itself one of Beijing's notable modern sights; many travelers arrive early specifically to see it.

Daxing Airport Express — the core transit asset

The Daxing Airport Express (大兴机场线) is the dedicated airport metro line. Express service runs from the PKX terminal station directly to 草桥 (Caoqiao) in southern central Beijing — about 19 minutes ride time, with one intermediate stop at 大兴新城 (Daxing New Town). Fare: ¥35 regular / ¥50 business class. Operating hours roughly 6:00am to 10:30pm.

From 草桥 you transfer to:

  • Beijing Metro Line 10 for the central Chaoyang corridor — 草桥 → 角门西 → 大红门 → 十里河 → 双井 → 国贸 (Guomao, CBD) → 金台夕照 → 呼家楼 → 团结湖 (Sanlitun area) → 亮马桥. About 30-37 min to most central Chaoyang destinations.
  • Beijing Metro Line 19 for the central south and station corridor — 草桥 → 景风门 (transfer to Line 14 → Beijing South Station, ~14 more minutes) or onward to 牛街 and 牡丹园.
  • Beijing Metro Line 4 from 草桥 (via 角门西 transfer) — reaches Beijing South Station, 西单, 王府井 (via Line 1 at 西单).

Why PKX beats PEK for Beijing South Station: the Daxing Express + Line 19 + Line 14 combo reaches Beijing South in just ~40 minutes — significantly faster than PEK's 75-minute path. If your trip is HSR-heavy (Beijing-Shanghai or Beijing-Tianjin from Beijing South), and you have a choice of PEK or PKX flights, PKX often saves you 35-45 minutes on the combined connection.

Where the Express enters your hotel area (Amap-verified 2026-05):

  • Beijing South Railway Station — ~40 min total via Caoqiao + Line 19 → 景风门 + Line 14 → 北京南站. The fastest airport-to-station connection in Beijing.
  • Chaoyang CBD / Guomao (国贸) — ~60 min via Caoqiao + Line 10 → 国贸.
  • Sanlitun — ~70 min via Caoqiao + Line 10 → 团结湖 + walk.
  • Wangfujing / Forbidden City — ~75 min via Caoqiao + Line 4 (via 角门西) + Line 1 (via 西单) or via Line 10 + Line 1.
  • Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) — ~2+ hours via Daxing Express + Line 10 + Capital Airport Express. Use the inter-airport shuttle bus instead (~90 min, ¥50).

Taxi, DiDi, and shuttle bus

Taxi from PKX to central Beijing runs ¥180-260 metered, 50-90 minutes depending on destination and time of day. Rush hour (5-7pm weekdays) on the South 5th Ring Road can turn 50 minutes into 100. The cost difference vs the Daxing Express is meaningful (¥35 vs ¥200+); take a taxi only if you're traveling as 3-4 people with heavy luggage or arriving very late.

DiDi from PKX works similarly. PKX is less congested than PEK for ride-hailing — match times are typically 3-7 minutes off-peak. The DiDi pickup zone is at the GTC (Ground Transportation Center) below the arrivals level — escalator down 1 level, signposted as 网约车候车区 (ride-hailing waiting zone) in Chinese and English.

For foreigners: use DiDi Rider (international DiDi app) or Alipay's embedded DiDi mini-program — both work with foreign credit cards as of 2026. The English interface is adequate; in-app translation handles driver SMS. See our DiDi for Foreigners guide.

Airport shuttle bus — PKX has bus lines to various central Beijing terminals. Fares ¥20-30, journey 90-130 minutes depending on destination. Useful if your hotel is near a bus terminus (e.g., Beijing South Station, Wangfujing, Xidan); less competitive than the Daxing Express for general central Beijing destinations.

Hotels at and near PKX

PKX has an unusually dense and modern hotel cluster — newer properties than PEK's, often with explicit international-traveler positioning.

Inside or walking-distance to the terminal:

  • Beijing Daxing Airport Hilton Garden Inn (北京大兴 国际机场希尔顿花园酒店) — 苑景西二路2号院1号楼1-9层. Walking distance to terminal, ~¥600-900 per night. The default international-brand pick at PKX. Check rates on Trip.com →
  • Beijing Daxing Airport Marriott Fairfield (北京大兴机场万枫酒店) — 苑景西二路6号院3号楼. Marriott Fairfield Inn brand, ~¥500-800. Bonvoy points eligible.
  • Atour S (亚朵S 北京大兴国际机场航站楼店) — 苑景西二路2号院2号楼1楼. Atour's premium S-series, an increasingly common foreigner-friendly modern Chinese brand. ~¥450-700.
  • Park Plaza Daxing (北京大兴机场丽筠酒店) — 苑景西二路2号院4号楼. Carlson's mid-upscale brand, ~¥500- 750.
  • Meichen Hotel — PKX terminal branch (美宸酒店 北京大兴国际机场店) — INSIDE the terminal at 2F northeast finger, walking distance to gates. Useful for very early departures or very late arrivals; ~¥350-550.

Tianzhu-style Daxing cluster (1-2 km from terminal, free shuttle):

  • JI Hotel (全季酒店 北京大兴国际机场航站楼店) — 苑景西二路2号院2号楼. ¥400-600. Same Quanji brand as the PEK T2 in-terminal property.
Atour's mid-budget brand. ~¥300- 450.
  • Coffetel by Lanting / Inn Cordial (朗丽兹) / Sea- Star (希岸Deluxe) — additional midrange chains in the cluster.

Hourly-rest options inside the terminal: 小鸟轻住太空舱 (P2 parking garage 3F, capsule pods, ¥80-150 per ~4-hour block); 刻睡小屋 (hourly sleep pods near the terminal). Useful for ultra-short layovers where leaving the terminal isn't worth the time cost.

Getting from PKX to the Great Wall

PKX is the wrong airport for a Great Wall day trip from the airport directly. Mutianyu (慕田峪) is ~110 km northeast of PKX; Badaling is ~95 km north. Both require coming into central Beijing first, then heading north — adding ~75 minutes versus starting from PEK.

If your itinerary is “fly into PKX, do the Great Wall first day,” consider an overnight in central Beijing before the Wall trip — the combined PKX-to-central + central- to-Wall same-day adds up to 6-8 hours of transit. For a Wall day trip from a central Beijing hotel, see the same operator options as from PEK (Trip.com day tour with central pickup is simplest; Mutianyu via 916 bus from 东直门 ~3 hours each way; Badaling via Jingzhang HSR from 清河 or Beijing North ~2.5 hours each way).

Using PKX for a layover Beijing visit

PKX is one of the eligible 240-hour transit ports for most Western nationalities — see our 240-hour transit visa tool for whether your passport qualifies. The PKX-to-central transit cost is meaningfully higher than PEK's in time terms (75 vs 62 min to Wangfujing), so layover planning is slightly tighter:

  • 4 hours — stay at the airport. Visit the Zaha Hadid central atrium, eat, rest. A round-trip Daxing Express ride to Caoqiao and back is feasible but eats 90 min of the 4.
  • 8 hours — Daxing Express to Caoqiao + Line 4/10 to a central destination, lunch + a single sight + back. ~3-4 hours of useful Beijing time. Yongdingmen-area sights or Tiananmen exterior are most efficient.
  • 12+ hours — a fuller half-day. Forbidden City + lunch + Wangfujing + back. ~7 hours useful Beijing time.
  • 24 hours — overnight in central Beijing (Wangfujing or Sanlitun), full day for marquee sights, back to PKX in the morning.

Subtract ~2.5 hours of round-trip transit from any layover-tour estimate, more than the ~2 hours needed from PEK.

Frequently asked questions

Is Beijing Daxing (PKX) the same as Beijing Capital (PEK)?
No — they are two different airports, 67 km apart. PKX (Beijing Daxing International, 北京大兴国际机场) opened in 2019 in southern Beijing, 46 km south of Tiananmen, in Daxing district. PEK (Beijing Capital International, 首都国际机场) is the older airport in the northeast, ~30 km from Tiananmen, opened progressively from 1958. Most foreign-flag carriers (United, Lufthansa, BA, Cathay, JAL, Singapore) operate from PEK; PKX hosts mainly China Southern (which moved its Beijing hub here in 2019), some China Eastern long-haul, Hebei Airlines, Hainan, Capital, plus several Korean and Russian carriers. Your boarding pass shows which one — check before heading to the airport. Inter-airport transfer takes ~90-120 minutes by taxi or 2+ hours by metro.
How do I get from PKX to central Beijing?
The dedicated airport metro is the Daxing Airport Express (大兴机场线). The Express runs from the PKX terminal station to 草桥 (Caoqiao) in southern central Beijing — express service ~19 minutes, fare ¥35 (regular) or ¥50 (business class). From 草桥 you transfer onto: Beijing Metro Line 10 for Chaoyang CBD / Sanlitun (~30-37 more minutes), Line 19 for Beijing South Railway Station via 14 (~20 more minutes), or Line 4 for Xidan / Beijing South / north Beijing (~30 more minutes). Total PKX-to-central-Beijing times: PKX → Beijing South Station ~40 min (the fastest); PKX → Chaoyang CBD/Guomao ~60 min; PKX → Sanlitun ~70 min; PKX → Wangfujing ~75 min — all per Amap path-routing 2026-05.
Which is faster from Beijing South Railway Station — PEK or PKX?
PKX, by a meaningful margin. PKX → Beijing South is ~40 minutes via the Daxing Airport Express + Line 19 + Line 14 transfer. PEK → Beijing South is ~75 minutes via the Capital Airport Express + Line 2 + Line 4 transfer. If your itinerary is HSR to Shanghai/Tianjin (which departs from Beijing South), and you have flight choice between PEK and PKX, PKX saves ~35 minutes on this connection — a real factor for connecting passengers. The reverse is true for the Forbidden City / Wangfujing area: PEK is ~62 minutes and PKX is ~75 minutes; PEK is the better fit for north-central Beijing destinations.
Does PKX have multiple terminals?
No — PKX is a single mega-terminal designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, opened in 2019. The starfish-shaped layout has six radiating arms (concourses A-F) but all share a single check-in hall + security + immigration. The longest walk from check-in to gate is ~600m versus PEK T3's ~1 km — meaningfully shorter despite PKX being a larger floor area. There's no T1/T2/T3 confusion to worry about. Your boarding pass lists a gate letter + number (e.g., D52); the wayfinding inside the terminal is consistent and bilingual.
Are there hotels at PKX?
Yes — an unusually dense cluster including in-terminal options and an integrated international-brand row. The main options: Beijing Daxing Airport Hilton Garden Inn (北京大兴国际机场希尔顿花园酒店) at 苑景西二路2号院, walking distance to the terminal, ~¥600-900. Beijing Daxing Airport Marriott Fairfield (北京大兴机场万枫酒店, 苑景西二路6号院 — Marriott Fairfield brand), ~¥500-800. Atour S (亚朵S) at 苑景西二路2号院, ~¥450-700. Park Plaza Daxing (北京大兴机场丽筠酒店), ~¥500-750. Inside the terminal: 美宸酒店 at the terminal 2F northeast finger (within walking distance to gates), capsule-style 小鸟轻住 at P2 parking garage 3F, plus 刻睡小屋 hourly-rest pods. For passengers with a 6am flight or an arrival after midnight, an integrated PKX hotel beats traveling into central Beijing.
Where is the VAT refund counter at PKX?
PKX has a centralized 离境退税 (departure-VAT-refund) counter on the international-departures level (typically 2F or 3F depending on your zone of departure; signposted in English and Chinese). The refund eligibility is the same as elsewhere in China: 'Tax Free' signage at the original retailer, ≥¥500 per receipt at participating shops, same-day purchase, retailer-completed VAT refund form, customs stamp before counter payment. Refund rate roughly 11-13% gross, net ~9-11% after handling fees. Arrive 60-90 minutes earlier than your normal check-in time to clear the customs stamp queue, which can take 20-40 minutes at peak. PKX peak departures are usually later morning (8am-12pm) and late afternoon (4pm-7pm) — refund queues are shorter at midday or early morning.
Where is DiDi (网约车) pickup at PKX?
Ground Transportation Center (GTC) at the terminal arrivals level, signposted as 网约车候车区 (ride-hailing waiting zone) in Chinese and English. PKX's GTC is on a lower level than the arrivals hall — follow signs to 'Ground Transport / 地面交通' from the arrivals area, escalator down 1 level. The walk from arrivals to the DiDi zone takes ~8-12 minutes including escalator. PKX is significantly less congested than PEK for ride-hailing (lower passenger volume, newer infrastructure), so match-times are usually 3-7 minutes off-peak. For foreigners: DiDi Rider (international app) or Alipay's embedded DiDi mini-program work with most foreign cards as of 2026. See our DiDi for Foreigners guide for app setup.
How early to arrive at PKX for departure?
PKX is meaningfully easier than PEK for departure logistics — newer terminal, shorter walks, less queuing. Realistic buffer: (1) Domestic flight, weekday off-peak — 75-90 minutes before scheduled departure. (2) International flight, weekday off-peak — 2 hours before departure. PKX's immigration queues at international departure are notably shorter than PEK T3E's (lower international volume). (3) International flight with VAT refund, peak hours — 2.5-3 hours. The customs-stamp step adds 30-45 min. (4) Golden Week / Spring Festival peak — add 30-45 minutes to all above. PKX is rarely the bottleneck in your trip; PEK frequently is.
