Zhangjiajie Railway Station 2026: Which to Use

Zhangjiajie has two railway stations 10 km apart — Zhangjiajie West (the HSR hub for the National Forest Park) and the older central Zhangjiajie Station (best for Tianmen Mountain). Which one your ticket says determines your whole arrival plan.

By China for Travelers Editorial · Published · Updated

This guide is written by an editorial team based in Chongqing — the editor has lived in mainland China since 2018 (8 years on the ground) but is not a Zhangjiajie resident and has not been on the ground in Zhangjiajie in 2026. Station layouts, distances and transit routings draw on Amap (高德地图) routing data queried 2026-05-23, published HSR schedules, Trip.com listings and aggregated 2024-2026 r/travelchina and r/chinatravel threads. This is Path-2 editorial-aggregated coverage — confirm platforms, fares and times on the 12306 app or Trip.com on the day, and corrections from Zhangjiajie residents are welcomed (see about page).

The most important thing: which station is which

Zhangjiajie has two railway stations roughly 10 km apart, and the biggest source of traveller confusion is arriving at the wrong one. Before anything else, read the station name on your ticket:

StationRail typeDistance to WulingyuanDistance to Tianmen MountainBest for
Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站)High-speed rail (HSR)~26 km / ~30 min taxi~10 km city centre + cable carMost HSR arrivals; National Forest Park visitors
Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站)Conventional + some intercity~34.5 km / ~36-40 min taxiAdjacent to cable-car baseTianmen Mountain visitors; city-centre access

Distances and times are Amap (高德地图) routing data queried 2026-05-23, door-to-destination estimates in normal traffic. Confirm journey details on the 12306 app before travel.

The rule of thumb: if you booked a high-speed train, you almost certainly want Zhangjiajie West. If your ticket says 张家界西 (Zhangjiajie West) or 张家界 (Zhangjiajie) look carefully — the characters differ and the stations are in opposite directions from Wulingyuan. A mix-up is a 30-minute taxi ride in the wrong direction, which is a real problem if you have a park-entrance slot booked.

Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站) — the HSR hub

Zhangjiajie West Railway Station is the modern high-speed-rail hub for the city, opened in 2019 as part of the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua (张吉怀高铁) HSR line. It sits roughly 10 km north of Zhangjiajie city centre and is the station used by virtually all intercity HSR services, including trains connecting to Changsha, Jishou, and Huaihua.

For visitors heading to the National Forest Park and Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie West is the right arrival station. The park's gateway town of Wulingyuan (武陵源) is approximately 26 km from the station — about 30 minutes by taxi in normal traffic (Amap 2026-05-23). From the station forecourt, taxis and DiDi are the standard options; there is no metro (Zhangjiajie has no subway system) and the tourist coaches can be infrequent outside peak season. A taxi to Wulingyuan will cost roughly ¥60-100 depending on the time of day and whether the driver uses the meter.

Station layout. Zhangjiajie West is a purpose-built HSR station — modern, clean, and significantly smaller and less overwhelming than the mega-hubs in Beijing or Shanghai. Real-name (实名制) rules apply: your passport is scanned at the automated gates as both your ticket and identity. Use the same passport you booked with. If the automated gate cannot read your passport, go to a staffed lane. Allow 30-40 minutes from arriving at the station to boarding your train — security check, ID gates and finding the platform all take time. The station has standard amenities: a waiting hall, convenience stores, and a taxi rank outside the main exit.

Getting to Wulingyuan from Zhangjiajie West. The most straightforward option is a taxi or DiDi direct to your hotel in Wulingyuan. Agree on a destination and confirm whether the driver will use the meter before getting in. For the National Forest Park main entrance areas, tell the driver you are heading to 武陵源景区 (Wulingyuan scenic area). Tourist shuttle buses also connect the station to Wulingyuan during peak season, but schedules are irregular — check locally on arrival.

Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) — the city-centre station

Zhangjiajie Station is the older city-centre station, handling conventional and some intercity rail services. For most travellers arriving by modern HSR, this will NOT be where you arrive — your ticket will say Zhangjiajie West. However, Zhangjiajie Station has one distinct advantage: the Tianmen Mountain (天门山) cable-car base station is immediately adjacent.

If Tianmen Mountain is your first destination — the glass skywalk, the Tianmen Cave, or the famous 99-bend road — arriving at or heading to Zhangjiajie Station puts you at the cable-car departure point without any additional transit. The cable car is one of the world's longest, and the base station is in the heart of the city, walkable from the railway station.

From Zhangjiajie Station, the distance to Wulingyuan is roughly 34.5 km — about 36-40 minutes by taxi in normal traffic (Amap 2026-05-23). This is notably further than from Zhangjiajie West, so if Wulingyuan is your primary destination, there is no advantage to targeting the central station. But if you are splitting your trip between Tianmen Mountain first and the forest park later, arriving into — or routing through — the city centre makes logistical sense.

City buses run from the central station to various city destinations. Taxis and DiDi are available from the station forecourt. The city centre has a wider range of hotels, restaurants and ATMs than Wulingyuan, which is primarily a park-gateway town.

Arriving via Changsha — the recommended route for most foreign travellers

Here is the single most useful piece of planning advice for reaching Zhangjiajie: fly into Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX), then take a high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West. This is how most well-organised international visitors arrive, and for good reason:

  • Changsha has far more flights — international routes, more domestic connections, and significantly better onward connections than Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG). DYG serves a limited number of domestic routes; many travellers cannot fly directly to Zhangjiajie at all.
  • The HSR connection is easy and comfortable — roughly 1.5 hours (approximately 90 minutes) by high-speed train from Changsha South Railway Station to Zhangjiajie West. The journey is on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua HSR line (张吉怀高铁), which crosses some genuinely scenic Hunan countryside.
  • Getting from Changsha Airport to the train station — Metro Line 6 connects Changsha Huanghua Airport to Changsha South Railway Station (长沙南站). The metro journey takes approximately 30 minutes, and the total transfer is well signposted.

Times are typical estimates — allow more during peak holiday periods and add 30-60 minutes for immigration and baggage claim at international arrivals. Confirm real-time train schedules on the 12306 app or Trip.com.

If you are flying into Changsha and using public transit to the station: take Metro Line 6 from the airport to Changsha South Railway Station (长沙南), then board the HSR to Zhangjiajie West. Trains between Changsha South and Zhangjiajie West run multiple times daily. Book tickets in advance during Golden Week (Oct 1-7) and other peak periods — Zhangjiajie is one of China's most popular domestic tourism destinations and trains can sell out. See the Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport guide for more on DYG and the direct-flight option.

Booking trains as a foreigner

Two reliable booking routes for foreign passport holders. The official 12306 app and website support foreign-passport registration and sell every train at face value — it is the authoritative source for schedules and real-time seat availability. Trip.com's English site sells the same tickets with an English interface and a small service fee, which many first-time visitors find easier.

Either way, the ticket is tied to your passport number — there is nothing to print, and you board by scanning the same passport at the automated gate. Use the same passport you booked with at every step. If the gate cannot read your document, go to a staffed lane and show your passport.

Zhangjiajie is genuinely popular: during National Day (Oct 1-7), the May holiday (May 1-5), and summer peak (July-August), trains from Changsha to Zhangjiajie sell out. Book at least 3-5 days ahead during these windows. Outside peak periods, booking the day before or on the day is often possible, but there is no guarantee on a busy weekend.

Getting around after you arrive

Zhangjiajie has no metro or subway. Once you arrive at either station, your options are:

  • Taxi / DiDi — the most flexible option for station-to-hotel transfers. DiDi works in Zhangjiajie city, though driver availability in Wulingyuan can be limited compared to larger cities. Confirm the destination clearly and check whether the driver will use the meter.
  • Tourist shuttle buses — during peak season, tourist coaches run between the city, Zhangjiajie West Station and Wulingyuan. Schedules vary by season; check locally on arrival.
  • Inside the National Forest Park — once you are at Wulingyuan, the park operates an extensive shuttle-bus network connecting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie (Avatar mountains area), Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream. A multi-day park ticket includes the shuttles. The getting around Zhangjiajie guide covers the park shuttle system, cable cars and the Bailong Elevator in full.

Where to stay near the stations

Most first-time visitors to Zhangjiajie stay in Wulingyuan town (武陵源区) — the park gateway, roughly 30 minutes from Zhangjiajie West by taxi. Staying in Wulingyuan puts you at the park entrance and saves the daily city-to-park commute, which adds up quickly on a multi-day park visit. The town has a concentrated strip of mid-range and budget hotels, guesthouses and restaurants catering to park visitors.

If you plan to visit both the National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain, staying in Zhangjiajie city centre offers a reasonable middle ground: the Tianmen cable-car base is beside the central station, and the city has more hotel variety and dining options than Wulingyuan. The downside is the 30-minute taxi ride to the forest park each day.

Our where to stay in Zhangjiajie guide compares Zhangjiajie city centre, Wulingyuan town, inside-park accommodation and the area near Tianmen Mountain — with honest notes on what each location is best for.

Frequently asked questions

Which Zhangjiajie railway station should I use for the National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站) is the one to use for the National Forest Park and Wulingyuan. It is the modern high-speed-rail hub opened in 2019 on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua (张吉怀) HSR line, located about 10 km north of the city centre and roughly 26 km / 30 minutes from Wulingyuan town — the park's gateway neighbourhood. Virtually all travellers arriving by high-speed rail will use Zhangjiajie West. The older Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) in the city centre is best for Tianmen Mountain, since the Tianmen Mountain cable-car base station is right beside it.
What is the difference between Zhangjiajie West and Zhangjiajie Station?
They are two separate stations serving different purposes. Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站) is the 2019-opened high-speed-rail hub on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua HSR line, about 10 km north of the city centre; it handles most intercity HSR trains and is the closer station for Wulingyuan and the National Forest Park. Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) is the older central station in the city, handling conventional and some intercity rail services; it is immediately beside the Tianmen Mountain cable-car base station, making it the natural starting point if Tianmen Mountain is your first destination. The two stations are roughly 10 km apart — a mix-up costs real time, so read the station name on your ticket carefully.
How do I get from Changsha to Zhangjiajie by high-speed train?
The standard route is to fly into Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX), the Hunan provincial capital, then take a high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station. The HSR journey takes roughly 1.5 hours (approximately 90 minutes) on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua line. Changsha has far more direct international and domestic flights than Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, and the train connection is frequent and comfortable. From Changsha South Railway Station (长沙南站) — which is connected to the Changsha airport area by Metro Line 6 — HSR trains to Zhangjiajie West run multiple times a day. Book via the 12306 app or Trip.com.
Can foreigners book Zhangjiajie trains with a passport?
Yes. Both stations are real-name (实名制): your passport is scanned at the automated gates as both your ticket and identity — there is nothing to print. Book through the official 12306 app or website (supports foreign-passport registration) or through Trip.com's English interface. Use the same passport you booked with at the station gates. If the automated gate cannot read your passport, use a staffed lane. Allow 30-40 minutes from arriving at the station to boarding your train — security check, ID gates, and finding the waiting hall all take time.
How far is Zhangjiajie West Station from Wulingyuan town?
Zhangjiajie West Railway Station is approximately 26 km from Wulingyuan town (the gateway neighbourhood for the National Forest Park), which works out to roughly 30 minutes by taxi or ride-hail in normal conditions. This is based on Amap (高德地图) routing data queried 2026-05-23. The older Zhangjiajie Station in the city centre is slightly farther from Wulingyuan at approximately 34.5 km / 36-40 minutes. Most visitors arriving by HSR will find a taxi or DiDi from Zhangjiajie West the most convenient option for reaching Wulingyuan directly without a city-centre transfer.
Is there a direct train from Beijing or Shanghai to Zhangjiajie?
Direct high-speed trains from Beijing or Shanghai to Zhangjiajie are limited. The most practical approach for most international travellers is to fly into Changsha Huanghua Airport (CSX) — which has significantly more direct flight connections — and then take the roughly 1.5-hour high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West. Alternatively, you can take an HSR train from Beijing or Shanghai to Changsha South (长沙南), then transfer to the Zhangjiajie-bound service. Always check current schedules on the 12306 app, as through-train availability changes seasonally.
Where should I stay when arriving at Zhangjiajie West Station?
Most leisure visitors to the National Forest Park stay in Wulingyuan town (武陵源区), the park gateway — it is approximately 30 minutes from Zhangjiajie West by taxi and puts you at the park entrance. If you plan to visit both the National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain, staying in Zhangjiajie city centre is a reasonable middle ground: about 10 km from Zhangjiajie West Station, and the city has the Tianmen cable-car base beside the central station. For a dedicated National Forest Park visit, Wulingyuan is the standard choice among travellers. See the where to stay in Zhangjiajie guide for area comparisons.
Does Zhangjiajie have a metro or subway?
No — Zhangjiajie does not have a metro or subway system. It is a small prefecture-level city in Hunan province, and public transit is limited to city buses and taxis. Within the National Forest Park, an extensive shuttle-bus network connects the main scenic zones and trailheads. Between the city and Wulingyuan, taxis, DiDi, and tourist coaches are the main options. The Getting Around Zhangjiajie guide covers the park shuttle network, the Bailong Elevator, cable cars, and the city-to-park logistics in full.
