Most travellers fly — ~2h35m and many flights a day. But there are three direct trains to Shanghai Hongqiao: two daytime services (~8h 8m, second class ¥966 – ¥1134) and an overnight sleeper that gets you in at ~07:00. Either way you clear the border once, at West Kowloon.
Fly, daytime train, or overnight sleeper?
Hong Kong to Shanghai is a long hop — about 1662 km of high-speed line through Jiangxi and Anhui, or a 2½-hour flight. All the options are real; which is best depends on whether you mind flying and whether you'd rather sleep through the journey:
| Option | Time · frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fly (HKG → PVG/SHA) | ~2h35m air · many daily | Fastest door-to-door (~6 h); ~¥950-1,500. PVG ~45 min from the centre, SHA is at Hongqiao itself. |
| Daytime direct train | ~8h 8m · 2/day | Shanghai Hongqiao, one-seat. Second class ~¥966 – ¥1134. Comfortable but a long sit. |
| Overnight sleeper (动卧) | ~11 h · 1/day | Leaves ~20:00, arrives ~07:00. 复兴号 4-berth sleeper, ~¥1,070 — sleep through it, save a hotel night. |
| Transfer at Guangzhou South | all day | West Kowloon → Guangzhou South (~50 min) then a Guangzhou South → Shanghai train — the fallback if the direct times don’t fit. |
Which should you pick?
- Fly
- You want the fastest trip. Many flights a day, ~6 h door-to-door — the default for most travellers.
- Daytime train
- You’d rather not fly, want a one-seat ride and the border cleared at West Kowloon instead of an airport. ~8 h, second class ¥966 – ¥1134.
- Overnight sleeper
- You’d like to travel while you sleep and arrive fresh at ~07:00 having saved a hotel night. A 复兴号 four-berth berth is ~¥1,070; light sleepers, note it’s shared.
Flying is usually the quicker call — compare live HKG → Shanghai fares and times across all the carriers.
Compare flightsHow the cross-border train works
If you take the train, the bit travellers worry about is the easy bit. Hong Kong West Kowloon uses co-located inspection: Hong Kong exit immigration and mainland Chinese entry immigration sit in the same hall, all on one level (B2). You queue once, walk through both checkpoints before you board, then ride an already-cleared train and step straight out at Shanghai Hongqiao.
At West Kowloon 西九龙站both stamps
Both stamps happen here before you board — Hong Kong exit, then mainland China entry, in one walk-through on B2. Clearance is usually 10-20 minutes; arrive about an hour ahead on a weekday, 1.5-2 hours at weekends or holidays. Check-in opens 15 minutes before departure and the gate closes 5 minutes before.
A few practical notesgood to know
Foreign-passport holders use the staffed counters (the self-service e-channels are for residents). There is no paid “fast-track” inside — ignore anyone selling one. Keep the Hong Kong landing slip you're given, and note the duty-free shops sit between the two checkpoints. Arriving at Shanghai Hongqiao is a plain domestic walk-out.
Flying is the same entry in immigration terms — you simply clear mainland China entry on arrival at Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA) instead of at West Kowloon.
Visa and entry rules
Whether you fly or take the train, arriving in Shanghai is a full mainland China entry. Hong Kong and the mainland are separate immigration zones — being admitted to Hong Kong grants you nothing on the mainland, so you must independently qualify to enter:
- Mainland China side (your arrival) — requires a valid Chinese visa, or you qualify under the 240-hour visa-free transit. Hong Kong counts as a third region for the transit policy, so a Hong Kong → Shanghai (transit) → onward international itinerary can qualify. A single-entry China visa you have already used cannot be reused for this entry.
- Hong Kong side (your departure) — you are leaving, so your Hong Kong entry status simply needs to still be valid. Most passports get visa-free entry to Hong Kong on arrival (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore and many others); neither the train nor the flight changes that.
Unsure how your nationality stands? The visa checker shows both the Mainland China and Hong Kong policies side by side, and the 240-hour transit planner checks a transit itinerary if your mainland leg is visa-free.
How to book with a foreign passport
Trip.com ↗ — the cross-border train (and the sleeper) booked in English with a foreign Visa or Mastercard, no Chinese phone number and no verification wait, plus 24/7 multilingual support. It searches the direct trains and the Guangzhou-South transfer in one place, lists the flights ↗ too, and lets you add Shanghai hotels to the same trip. See the booking walkthrough.
12306 English app — the official China Railway channel: face-value fares in CNY, no booking fee. The trade-off is hassle — passport real-name registration must clear before you can buy (often slow), it sometimes wants a Chinese phone number for payment, and customer service is Chinese-first.
MTR Hong Kong — natural if you are booking the train from the HK side in HKD. Same shared inventory; tickets open 15 days before departure, and the overnight sleeper berths sell out fastest around mainland holidays — book early.

Arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao — getting into town
The direct trains terminate at Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥站), the big integrated hub on the west side of the city (next to SHA Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2). It's huge, so allow ~5-10 minutes to walk from the platform to the metro — follow the 地铁 (Metro) signs. Into central Shanghai:
| Onward | How | Time · cost |
|---|---|---|
| The Bund / Nanjing Rd | Metro Line 2 direct to 南京东路 (no transfer), then ~850 m walk | ~45-50 min · ¥5 |
| People's Square | Metro Line 2 direct to 人民广场 (on the way to the Bund) | ~40 min · ¥4 |
| Door to door | Taxi from the rank (avoid the touts) | ~30-40 min · ¥50-80 |
Mind the last metro. Line 2's last train is around 22:30-23:00 — the later daytime train can arrive close to that, so if you're cutting it fine, plan a taxi. Use the official taxi rank or a map-app ride-hail (pickup is at the P9/P10 car parks; a quieter spot is by the Hongqiao Tiandi mall) — ignore the “fixed-price” touts. Pay the metro with an Alipay QR (搜 “上海地铁乘车码”) or your passport at the staffed gate.
Hongqiao is also the springboard for the classic day trips — Suzhou ~23 min, Hangzhou ~45 min — and the metro reaches the former French Concession and Disney too. Full station detail (lines, exits, the SHA airport link) is in our Shanghai Hongqiao station guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Hong Kong to Shanghai?
Three ways. (1) Fly: Hong Kong (HKG) to Shanghai (PVG or SHA) is about 2 hours 35 minutes nonstop, with many flights a day (China Eastern, Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Spring) — the fastest option, ~6 hours door-to-door. (2) The direct high-speed train: three a day run Hong Kong West Kowloon to Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) — two daytime services of about 8 hours and one overnight sleeper (动卧) that leaves around 20:00 and arrives about 07:00. Second class on the day train is around ¥966; immigration is cleared at West Kowloon before boarding. (3) Transfer by rail via Guangzhou South if the direct times don't fit. Most travellers fly; the train is for those who'd rather not, or who like the idea of an overnight sleeper.
Is there a direct train from Hong Kong to Shanghai?
Yes — there are three direct high-speed trains a day, all to Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥). Two are daytime services of roughly 8 hours, and one is an overnight sleeper EMU (动卧) that leaves Hong Kong West Kowloon around 20:00 and reaches Shanghai about 07:00 the next morning. They run via Shenzhen North, Ganzhou, Nanchang, Huangshan North, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Second class on the day train is about ¥966; the overnight sleeper berth is around ¥1,070. Book ahead, especially around mainland holidays.
How long is the Hong Kong to Shanghai train?
The fastest daytime direct train does Hong Kong West Kowloon to Shanghai Hongqiao in about 8 hours (a second daytime service is ~8h45m). The overnight sleeper takes about 11 hours but you spend them asleep — leaving around 20:00 and arriving about 07:00. By comparison the flight is about 2h35m in the air, or roughly 6 hours door-to-door once you add airport time.
Is there an overnight sleeper train from Hong Kong to Shanghai?
Yes. One of the three daily direct services is an overnight sleeper EMU (动卧) — a 复兴号 sleeper train with four-berth compartments, bed curtains, charging points and a toiletry kit. It leaves Hong Kong West Kowloon around 20:00 and arrives Shanghai Hongqiao about 07:00, so you sleep through the journey and save a hotel night. A berth is around ¥1,070 (the lower berth fits a couple of 26-inch cases; the upper is a little cheaper). Light sleepers should note it's a shared compartment.
Should I fly or take the train from Hong Kong to Shanghai?
Fly if you want the fastest trip — there are many flights a day and it's ~6 hours door-to-door versus ~8 hours by daytime train. Take the daytime train if you'd rather not fly, want a one-seat ride and clear the border at West Kowloon instead of an airport. Take the overnight sleeper if you'd like to travel while you sleep and arrive fresh at 07:00 having saved a hotel night. Around mainland holidays, when airfares spike, the train can also be the cheaper choice.
Where do I clear immigration on the Hong Kong to Shanghai train?
At Hong Kong West Kowloon station, before you board — and it's all on one level (B2). Hong Kong exit and mainland China entry sit in the same hall, so you walk through both checkpoints in one go, usually 10-20 minutes, then board an already-cleared train. Arrive about an hour ahead on a weekday (1.5-2 hours at weekends or holidays); check-in opens 15 minutes before departure and the gate closes 5 minutes before. Foreign-passport holders use the staffed counters rather than the residents' self-service e-channels. Arriving at Shanghai Hongqiao is a domestic walk-out.
Do I need a China visa to travel from Hong Kong to Shanghai?
Yes — both the train and the flight are a full mainland China entry, so you need a valid Chinese visa, or you qualify under the 240-hour visa-free transit. Hong Kong and the mainland are separate immigration zones, so being admitted to Hong Kong grants you nothing on the mainland, and a single-entry China visa you have already used cannot be reused. Our visa checker shows both the Mainland China and Hong Kong policies for your nationality.
How do I get to the Bund from Shanghai Hongqiao station?
Metro Line 2 runs direct from Hongqiao Railway Station east to 南京东路 (Nanjing Road East) — about 850 m from the Bund — in roughly 32 minutes of riding, or ~45-50 minutes door-to-door once you add the ~5-10 minute walk to the metro inside the huge station. The fare is ¥5 and there's no transfer; it also passes 人民广场 (People's Square) and 静安寺 (Jing'an Temple). A taxi is ~¥50-80. Note the metro's last train is around 22:30-23:00, so if the later daytime train gets you in close to that, plan a taxi.
How do I book Hong Kong to Shanghai with a foreign passport?
For the train, book on Trip.com in English with a foreign card (no Chinese phone number, no verification wait), on the official 12306 app (face-value fares in CNY but Chinese-first), or via MTR Hong Kong if you're paying in HKD. For the flight, Trip.com lists all the carriers in one English search. Enter each traveller's passport exactly as printed — booking is real-name and the same passport is checked at immigration. Train tickets open 15 days before departure; the overnight sleeper berths sell out fastest around holidays.
Verification scope
Route data — distance, journey times, fare bands and the daily frequency — is sampled from China’s national rail system and refreshed monthly; the three direct West Kowloon → Shanghai Hongqiao trains (two daytime ~8h, one overnight sleeper) were cross-checked on the 12306 timetable 2026-06-29. The direct services’ train numbers change with timetable revisions, so we describe them by route, not a fixed number.
Hong Kong MTR times are estimates, not a routing-engine quote — Amap (高德地图) transit coverage is limited inside Hong Kong. The West Kowloon crossing and the Hongqiao arrival times are Amap routing + traveller reports (小红书 / 点点, 2026-06-29); traveller-reported figures move and are flagged as such. Flight times and frequency (~2h35m) are web-confirmed.
Confirm before booking: exact schedules and fares vary by train, flight and season, and entering the mainland depends on your nationality — check both the Mainland China and Hong Kong policies for your passport, and that your China visa or visa-free eligibility is valid, before you travel.
