Shenzhen to Hong Kong: Train & Border Crossings
Two cities, one short hop — but two immigration zones. Everything a foreign traveler needs for the Shenzhen ↔ Hong Kong crossing: the 14-minute Express Rail Link, the metro border crossings, fares, documents, and which to choose.

The two ways across
Shenzhen and Hong Kong sit right against each other, but crossing means leaving mainland China and entering Hong Kong — a real immigration border. There are two practical routes for a foreign traveler: the high-speed train, and the metro-plus-border-walk crossings.
Option 1 — the Express Rail Link (fastest)
The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link runs high-speed trains into Hong Kong West Kowloon (香港西九龙) station, in the heart of Kowloon. From Shenzhen the boarding stations are:
- Futian (福田) — in central Shenzhen, ~14 minutes to West Kowloon. The quickest option if you are already downtown.
- Shenzhen North (深圳北) — the main HSR hub, ~19–23 minutes to West Kowloon, and where long-distance trains from the rest of China arrive.
The clever part is immigration: at West Kowloon, mainland exit control and Hong Kong entry control are in the same building ("one station, two checks"). You ride across, then clear both checkpoints in sequence after arrival — no separate border stop. Trains are frequent and second class runs about HK$78 (~¥70) from Futian.
Cross-border Express Rail Link tickets can be booked in English with a foreign card. Passport details are required at booking for the cross-border service.

Option 2 — the metro border crossings (cheapest)
The traditional way is to ride the Shenzhen Metro to a border checkpoint, walk through immigration, and pick up the Hong Kong MTR on the other side. The two main crossings:
- Futian Checkpoint (福田口岸) — Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 and 10 to the border; cross to the Hong Kong MTR at Lok Ma Chau. Modern and usually quick.
- Luohu / Lo Wu (罗湖口岸) — Shenzhen Metro Line 1 to Luohu; cross to the MTR East Rail line at Lo Wu, which runs straight into Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The classic, busiest crossing.
These cost only a few yuan and HK dollars in fares, run very frequently, and are handy if you are staying near the border — but plan 1.5–2.5 hours door to door with the walk and the queues, versus the train's near-seamless ride.
Documents & the two-zone rule
Bring your passport. Most Western nationalities enter Hong Kong visa-free for short stays. The key thing to understand: the mainland and Hong Kong are separate immigration zones. Leaving Shenzhen uses your China exit; coming back later requires a China visa or residence status that still permits re-entry. If you are on a single-entry China visa, crossing to Hong Kong and returning means you need a multiple-entry visa or a fresh one. Always confirm your own nationality's rules — see our visa checker.
Which should you take?
Take the Express Rail Link for speed and a single seamless ride into central Kowloon — ideal if you are heading downtown and value your time. Take a metro crossing for the cheapest fare, the most frequent departures, or if your hotel is near Futian or Luohu. Neither is hard; the train simply trades a little money for a lot less hassle.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to get from Shenzhen to Hong Kong?
- On the high-speed Express Rail Link, Futian to Hong Kong West Kowloon is about 14 minutes and Shenzhen North about 19–23 minutes of riding time — though you should budget extra for immigration, which is done inside West Kowloon station. Crossing instead on the metro at Futian or Luohu takes longer (allow 1.5–2.5 hours door to door) but is cheaper and more flexible.
- How much is the Shenzhen to Hong Kong high-speed train?
- Second class from Futian to West Kowloon is roughly HK$78 (about ¥70); from Shenzhen North a little more. Fares vary slightly by train. The metro border crossings cost only a few yuan/HK dollars in fares but take much longer.
- Do I clear immigration on the train or at a border post?
- On the Express Rail Link, mainland exit and Hong Kong entry checks are co-located inside Hong Kong West Kowloon station — you clear both, one after the other, in the same building after you arrive. On the metro crossings (Futian Checkpoint, Luohu), you clear mainland and Hong Kong control at the border building and then continue on the Hong Kong MTR.
- What documents do I need to cross from Shenzhen to Hong Kong?
- Your passport. Most Western passport holders enter Hong Kong visa-free. Remember that mainland China and Hong Kong are separate immigration zones: leaving the mainland uses up your China entry, so if you plan to return to the mainland you need a China visa or status that still permits re-entry. Check your own nationality’s rules before you go.
- Which is better — the high-speed train or the metro border crossing?
- Take the Express Rail Link if you value speed and a single seamless ride into central Kowloon. Take the metro crossing at Futian or Luohu if you want the cheapest option, more frequent departures, or you are staying near the border. Both are easy; the train just saves time and hassle.
