The line that changed this trip

For years, getting from Chongqing to Zhangjiajie meant a long overnight conventional train or a short but fiddly flight. The new high-speed corridor — completing the link between Chongqing and the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua and Qian–Zhang–Chang high-speed lines — has collapsed the fastest journey to 2 hours 2 minutes, city-centre to the edge of the Avatar mountains. That single change flips the default: for most foreign travellers the train is now the obvious choice over flying.

I've lived in Chongqing since 2018, so the Chongqing end of this trip is home ground — the new Chongqing East station, the metro to it, the departure experience. The line itself is new, so the times, prices and train counts below are verified against 12306 and Trip.com schedules (checked 2026-05-30) rather than from a personal ride end-to-end.

Use Chongqing East — not North or West

This is the one thing to get right. The fast ~2-hour trains start from Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站), the new southeast high-speed hub that opened in 2025. A handful of services also start from Chongqing North, Chongqing West and even the airport station — but those are routed the long way round and take 3h30m to 4h20m. Same destination, nearly double the time. Always match the origin station to the train number on your ticket.

Chongqing East is in Nan'an District, about 35 minutes from Jiefangbei. Metro Line 6 serves it now; Lines 24 and 27 are still under construction, so check the current metro map or budget for a DiDi if you're staying downtown. Full detail in our Chongqing East Railway Station guide.

Arriving at Zhangjiajie West

Arriving at Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) — where the fast Chongqing trains pull in.

Trains arrive at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站), the high-speed station about 30 minutes from Zhangjiajie city and roughly 40 minutes from Wulingyuan, the gateway town beside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Most first-time visitors are headed for Wulingyuan, so factor that final transfer into your day.

One trap: Zhangjiajie West is not the old central Zhangjiajie Station, which sits right by the Tianmen Mountain cable car. If your plan is Tianmen Mountain first, the central station can be handier — but the fast Chongqing trains use Zhangjiajie West. Read your ticket. Which class to book

For two hours, second class (¥191 – ¥261) is perfectly comfortable and what most people ride. First class (¥305 – ¥370) buys a 2+2 layout and a quieter car — a small upgrade worth it on a busy holiday train. Business class (¥630 – ¥763) is more than triple the fare and overkill for this distance.

Train vs flight

Chongqing does have flights to Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG), roughly 70 minutes in the air. But DYG is a small airport with limited Chongqing frequencies, and once you add the trip out to Chongqing Jiangbei, security, boarding and the transfer from DYG into town, the door-to-door time lands around four hours — longer than the train's ~3h door-to-door, and usually more expensive. Unless a specific flight time fits your schedule perfectly, take the train.

When to go, and booking ahead

Zhangjiajie is busiest in the summer school holidays (July–August) and over the October national-day week, when the fast trains and the park itself fill up. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot for the mountains. On peak dates, book a few days ahead; on a normal weekday there's usually space close to departure, but the cheapest discounted fares go first.
