Chongqing West Railway Station: Metro, Hotels, Chengdu 2026

The newer (2018) Chongqing HSR station in southwest Shapingba — Line 5 + Loop Line metro, which Chengdu G-trains use it versus the other two Chongqing stations, the Eye-of-Chongqing hotel tower, and why connectivity to downtown is slower than from Chongqing North.

By China for Travelers Editorial · Published · Updated

This guide is written by a Singapore passport holder based in Chongqing since 2018 (8 years on the ground). I've used Chongqing West a handful of times for Chengdu G-trains when the routing required this specific station, and observed the confusion that “which Chongqing HSR station is this ticket?” creates for foreign travellers — the question this article opens with. Walking and transit times from Amap (高德地图) routing 2026-05-21. Path-1 first-hand for the station's metro access, the Eye-of-Chongqing hotel cluster, and the in-station food situation; Path-2 editorial-aggregated for the 2024-2025 Chengdu G-train station-reassignment patterns (drawn from 12306 timetable shifts and r/chinalife traveller reports — I have not ridden every Chengdu-Chongqing service personally).

Which Chongqing HSR station is my ticket actually from?

Chongqing has three major HSR stations, and they are not interchangeable. Foreign travellers booking on 12306 or Trip.com routinely assume “Chongqing” on their ticket means the same station every time — it doesn't. The three stations:

  • Chongqing North (重庆北站) — the original primary HSR terminus, on the Yubei / Jiangbei side. Most historical Chengdu, Wulong, and Yichang trains. See our Chongqing North guide.
  • Chongqing West (重庆西站) — this article. Opened 2018 in the southwest corner of Shapingba district. Many 2024-2025 Chengdu G-trains shifted here.
  • Shapingba HSR (沙坪坝站) — under the Sanxia Square mall in central Shapingba, ~5 km from Chongqing West. Also serves selected Chengdu G-trains. Easy to confuse with this article's station because both are in Shapingba district.

These three stations are 14-20 km apart from each other and connected by very different metro lines. Always verify the Chinese station name printed on your ticket — usually written as 重庆北, 重庆西, or 沙坪坝 in small Chinese at the top of the ticket. The English booking UIs frequently render all three as “Chongqing” without distinguishing — that is the source of the confusion.

If you booked on 12306 or Trip.com, the train number embeds the station. Search the train number on the platform's schedule view and the 出发站 (departure station) field is definitive. Older travel guides referencing “Chongqing” without specifying station are likely out of date.

Metro access — Line 5 + Loop Line

Chongqing West Railway Station has its own metro station of the same name (重庆西站), directly outside the HSR exit. Two lines serve it:

  • Line 5 (轨道交通 5 号线) — runs from Tiaodeng (跳磴) in the south up through Chongqing West, Stone Bridge (石桥铺, where you transfer to Line 1 for the peninsula), Hongyancun, and onward to Central Park West (中央公园西, where you transfer to Line 10 for the airport). Line 5 is the primary line for foreigner trips out of this station.
  • Loop Line (环线) — Chongqing's outer- ring metro. Useful for transfers to Xiejiawan (Line 2), Erlang, or Haoxianglai. Less useful than Line 5 for most foreigner itineraries because the peninsula stops require multiple transfers.

The metro station is signposted “重庆西站” on the map and the station entrance is at street level via Exit 1. Plan ~5 minutes from HSR arrival hall to metro turnstile.

Getting from Chongqing West to CKG airport

The honest answer: it's slow. Two viable options:

  • Metro Line 5 → Line 10: From Chongqing West metro, take Line 5 toward Central Park West (中央公园西). Transfer at 中央公园西 to Line 10 going north — Line 10 is the line that serves CKG T2 and T3. Total ~84 minutes including the transfer, ¥7-8 fare. This is the metro reality for this station and is meaningfully slower than the 33-minute direct Line 10 from Chongqing North.
  • Taxi / DiDi: ~35 minutes off-peak, ¥100-130 metered fare. Recommended if you have a tight HSR-to-flight connection. Foreign credit card via Alipay International works on DiDi (verified 2026 by this editor).
  • Direct airport bus: There is no fast dedicated bus from Chongqing West to CKG — public buses exist but are slow and not recommended for foreigners with luggage.

If your trip is fly-in to CKG and you have flexibility on which Chongqing HSR station your onward train uses, prefer Chongqing North for the Line 10 direct connection. If your ticket is locked to Chongqing West, allow at least 2 hours between flight arrival (off plane) and HSR departure.

Getting from Chongqing West to central Chongqing

To Jiefangbei (Yuzhong CBD)

Metro Line 5 from Chongqing West toward the city → transfer at 石桥铺 (Shiqiaopu) → Line 1 → 较场口 (Jiaochangkou) for Jiefangbei. Total ~60 minutes, ¥5-6. Alternative via Loop Line + Line 2 takes ~64 minutes. Taxi / DiDi is ~30-40 minutes off-peak, ¥70-90.

Compare to Chongqing North which reaches the same Jiefangbei in ~31 minutes by metro. This West station is approximately twice the metro time to central Chongqing. Plan accordingly.

To Hongyadong + the night-view circuit

Same Line 5 → Line 1 routing to 较场口, then walk 10 minutes north downhill to Hongyadong. Allow ~75 minutes door-to-door. See our Hongyadong night view guide.

To Shapingba HSR station (the other nearby HSR)

Worth knowing because the two stations are easy to mix up. Line 5 northbound → transfer at Shapingba (沙坪坝, Line 1) → one stop to Sanxia Square. ~25 minutes total. Or taxi ~10 minutes, ¥15-25.

Which Chengdu G-trains depart from here

The 2024-2025 Chengdu-Chongqing platform reassignment shifted some services from Chongqing North to Chongqing West and Shapingba HSR. The current rough split:

  • Many 1h 20m intercity G-trains remain at Chongqing North.
  • Some faster 1h 10m or under services using the newer Chengdu-Chongqing Mid-line use Chongqing West or Shapingba.
  • Peak-hour services are sometimes redistributed across all three stations to spread platform load.

The only reliable way to know your station is to search your specific train number on 12306 or Trip.com — the 出发站 (departure station) field on the train detail page is definitive. The English booking UI sometimes shows just “Chongqing” without the station qualifier; don't trust that field alone. See our Chengdu ↔ Chongqing HSR guide for the route detail and our 12306 English app guide for the booking flow.

Hotels in the Eye-of-Chongqing tower

Chongqing West has the same unusual hotel-cluster pattern as Chongqing North: ~19 hotel brands concentrated in a single high-rise tower directly outside the station. The complex is called 旭辉西投重庆之眼 (Eye of Chongqing) T3 at Fengzhong Road 192 (凤中路 192 号), and brands sharing the tower include:

  • Mid-tier domestic chains: Hanting (汉庭), JJ Inn (全季), Lavanda (麗枫), IU — typical Chinese business hotel quality, ¥250-450/night peak
  • Smaller boutique-style brands: Jiaduo (佳朵), Chengji Future (成季未来), Hesheng (禾生), Cheng Art (成季艺术), Mu Zi (木子), Xi Yun (希云), and ~10 others on different floors
  • One Hanting outlet at the station's adjacent Yutie 3 building, technically separate from the T3 tower

The cluster trade-off is identical to Chongqing North's Huayu Motian: maximum convenience-to-station versus typical mid-tier Chinese business hotel quality. International luxury chains are not in this neighborhood. If you want Niccolo / Hyatt / JW Marriott quality, you taxi out to Jiefangbei (~30-40 min) or Guanyinqiao (~25-35 min).

Food at and around the station

Eat inside the station. Amap returned zero restaurant POIs within 500m of Chongqing West in May 2026 — even more sparse than Chongqing North's 3 POIs. The immediate neighborhood is utility commercial buildings and hotel towers with no street-level dining grid yet (this is a relatively new station and the surrounding area is still building out).

Inside the station:

  • Domestic chain quick-service: Lao Xiang Ji (老乡鸡), Real Kung Fu (真功夫), Wallace (华莱士), KFC, McDonald's — all ¥25-50, English-or-pictures menus
  • Chongqing Xiao Mian (small noodles) counters: Few small shops doing the local noodle for ¥15-20. Functional
  • Convenience stores: 7-Eleven and FamilyMart for snacks and water

No Chongqing hot pot at this station. The genuine local food scene requires a taxi to Jiefangbei (Bayi Lu strip), Shapingba (Sanxia Square), or Guanyinqiao. For a layover or transfer night, the in-station food is adequate; for a real Chongqing meal, leave the area.

Late-night arrivals and early departures

Chongqing West follows similar late-night patterns as the other HSR stations:

  • Metro closes ~11pm — Line 5 stops running between 10:50pm and 11:20pm depending on the day
  • DiDi available 24h — pickup zone is outside Exit 1 with blue signage. Foreign card via Alipay International works
  • Stay in the Eye-of-Chongqing tower — if you have an early HSR or late arrival, the on-tower hotels are the cleanest option. Book through Trip.com filtered by “near Chongqing West Railway Station.”

Frequently asked questions

Is Chongqing West Railway Station the same as Chongqing North or Shapingba station?
No — Chongqing has THREE separate HSR stations and they are not interchangeable. (1) Chongqing North (重庆北站) on the Yubei / Jiangbei side, the original primary HSR terminus. (2) Chongqing West (重庆西站) opened 2018 in the southwest corner of Shapingba district — this article. (3) Shapingba HSR (沙坪坝站) under the Sanxia Square mall in central Shapingba. They are 14-20 km apart and connected by very different metro lines. Many 2024-2025 Chengdu G-trains shifted from Chongqing North to Chongqing West, so your ticket may now use a different station than older guides suggest — always verify the Chinese station name (重庆北站 / 重庆西站 / 沙坪坝) printed on the ticket.
Which metro lines serve Chongqing West Railway Station?
Two lines, sharing one metro station entrance directly outside the HSR exit. (1) Line 5 (轨道交通5号线) runs from the Tiaodeng terminus northward through Chongqing West toward Shibashi Road, Stone Bridge (石桥铺), Hongyancun, and onward to Yuelai. (2) Loop Line (环线), Chongqing's outer-ring metro, passes through Chongqing West. Both lines connect to Chongqing's broader metro network at Stone Bridge (石桥铺, Line 1) for the fastest route to Yuzhong Peninsula, or via the Loop Line to Xiejiawan, Haoxianglai, or Erlang. The station entrance is signposted '重庆西站' on the metro map.
How do I get from Chongqing West to Chongqing Jiangbei Airport (CKG)?
Metro Line 5 → transfer at 中央公园西 (Central Park West) → Line 10 → CKG T2 or T3. Total ~84 minutes including the transfer. This is notably slower than the airport-to-station options from Chongqing North (~33 minutes direct on Line 10). If your trip plan is fly-in to CKG and then HSR from Chongqing West, the metro is workable but not fast — many travelers use DiDi (~35 minutes off-peak, ¥100-130) when timing matters. If you have flexibility, prefer Chongqing North for HSR connections that don't require the West station.
How do I get from Chongqing West to Jiefangbei (Yuzhong CBD)?
Metro Line 5 → transfer at 石桥铺 (Shiqiaopu) → Line 1 → 较场口 (Jiaochangkou). About 60 minutes total, ¥5-6 fare. An alternative via the Loop Line and Line 2 (transfer at 谢家湾) takes a similar ~64 minutes. Taxi / DiDi is ~30-40 minutes off-peak, ¥70-90. Compare this to Chongqing North (~31 minutes by metro to Jiefangbei) — West is roughly twice the metro time. This matters for trip planning: if you're not specifically tied to a Chengdu G-train that departs from West, the central-Chongqing experience is faster from a Chongqing North arrival.
Which Chengdu HSR trains depart from Chongqing West vs Chongqing North vs Shapingba?
The split changed in 2024-2025 and isn't fully stable. Roughly: the Chengdu-Chongqing intercity G-trains that take 1h 20m mostly still leave from Chongqing North; some newer fast-Chengdu services (1h 10m or under, using the Chengdu-Chongqing Mid-line) leave from Chongqing West or Shapingba; certain peak-hour Chongqing-Chengdu G-trains are now distributed across all three stations to spread platform load. The only reliable way to know is your specific ticket. Search the train number on 12306 or Trip.com — it will show the exact 出发站 (departure station). Allow 30-60 minutes of buffer if you arrive on a different station than your ticket specifies.
Are there hotels right at Chongqing West Railway Station?
Yes — but in an unusual concentration pattern. About 19+ hotel brands cluster inside a single tower complex called 重庆之眼 (Eye of Chongqing) T3 at Fengzhong Road 192, immediately outside the station's south side. The brands include Hanting (汉庭), JJ Inn (全季), Lavanda (麗枫), IU, and 15+ smaller domestic chains operating on different floors of the same tower. The pattern mirrors the Huayu Motian cluster at Chongqing North — multiple brands sharing one building, optimized for transit-night stays rather than tourist destinations. International luxury chains are not in this area; you would taxi to Jiefangbei (~30-40 min) for those.
What food options are at Chongqing West Railway Station?
Eat at the in-station food court — there is essentially nothing within 500m outside the station per Amap May 2026 (zero restaurant POIs returned from a 500m around-search). The in-station food zone has the usual Chinese-station mix: 老乡鸡, 真功夫, Wallace, KFC, McDonald's, and a few Sichuan-noodle counters in the ¥25-50 range. There's also a 7-Eleven and FamilyMart for snacks. For a real Chongqing meal (hot pot, Xiao Mian) you have to taxi out — Jiefangbei is 30-40 minutes away. If your trip plan is HSR-in-and-out without leaving the station area, your meals will be utility food.
Is Chongqing West a good base if my trip is mainly Chengdu plus Chongqing?
Only if your Chengdu G-train specifically uses Chongqing West, AND you want to save the metro time to Chongqing North on the morning of your Chengdu transfer. Otherwise no — the Shapingba HSR station (5 km away, under Sanxia Square mall) gives you the same Chengdu connection plus access to Shapingba's actual restaurants, university district, and Line 1 connectivity, all at similar or lower hotel rates. Most travelers planning a Chongqing+Chengdu trip should base in central Chongqing (Jiefangbei) and metro out to whichever station their ticket uses on the morning of transfer.
