For travelers who just want to be there fast, the flight still edges it — but here the train has an unusually strong counter-argument: price.
Ride for the experience — or the price. The train earns its day if you dislike flying, want to see Xi’an and the Qinling give way to the Yangtze hills through the window, or plan to break the journey partway. Xi’an is the classic stopover — see Beijing → Xi’an and then carry on south. Nobody does Chongqing as a day trip from Beijing — at a full day each way it is an overnight-plus destination, and most travelers give it two or three nights. The draws: the cyberpunk cityscape and the Liziba monorail that threads through a residential tower; the riverside Hongyadong stilt-house complex and the Yangtze cable car; Chongqing hot pot; the old porcelain port of Ciqikou; and, further out, the UNESCO Dazu Rock Carvings and the start of the Yangtze river cruise through the Three Gorges. Chongqing North 重庆北站 sits on the Jiangbei side, a short metro ride from the riverside downtown. Remember the North-Square / South-Square split, which goes by your gate NUMBER, not compass sense: gates 1–13 exit to the North Square (北广场), 14–26 to the South (南广场). The squares have different metro entrances — North Square = Lines 10 + 4, South Square = Lines 10 + 3 + the Loop (环线) — and if you surface at the wrong one it is one stop on Line 10 between them, not a long walk.
